## Story

## The Old Castle

At the edge of a small town, an old castle stood on top of a hill. Its windows were dusty, its gate was rusty, and its towers looked pointy against the sky.

People whispered that the castle was haunted, but nobody had checked for a long time. Maya, Finn, Leo, and Priya wanted to know what was inside.

They told Maya's aunt where they were going, promised to stay together, and packed flashlights, water, snacks, and a notebook for clues.

"If anything feels unsafe, we turn back," Maya said.

"Agreed," Finn said. "But first, we ask good questions."

The gate gave a long rusty squeak when Leo pushed it open. Everyone jumped, then laughed when Priya pointed to the hinges.

"First clue," she said. "Old metal can make a surprising sound."

## Exploring the Old Castle

With flashlights in hand, the kids stepped into the castle hall. Dust lay on the floor like gray powder, and their shoes left clear prints behind them.

They walked through narrow hallways and looked into open rooms. There were old paintings, wooden benches, paper streamers, and painted shields on the walls.

"These decorations do not look ancient," Priya said, brushing dust from a paper moon. "They look like party decorations."

"A castle party?" Leo asked.

"Maybe," Maya said. She wrote it down. "Castle party. Old decorations. Rusty gate."

After a careful search, Finn pointed to a bookshelf. One book jutted out farther than the rest.

"Wow!" said another child. "I wonder where this leads!"

The group gathered around to investigate.

## The Hidden Door

Finn tapped the book that jutted out from the shelf.

"Look at this," he said. "It is dusty on top, but the side is clean. Someone touched it a lot."

Maya checked the floor. There were scratch marks in a half circle.

"Maybe the shelf moves," she said.

Priya pushed the book gently. Nothing happened. Leo pushed the shelf. Nothing happened. Then Finn pulled the book down like a handle.

_Click._

The shelf slid aside and showed a narrow door.

"We go slowly," Maya said. "One room, then we decide."

The others nodded. They stepped through together.

## The Mysterious Red Glow

Beyond the hidden door, a faint red glow shone from the far side of a hallway.

The children stopped.

"Red lights can mean stop," Leo whispered.

"Or decorations," Priya said. "Let us check from here first."

They shone their flashlights down the hall. The glow came from a small red bulb above a doorway. Under it hung a crooked sign.

Maya wiped dust from the sign with her sleeve.

**Costume Hall. This Way.**

"Another clue," she said.

## The Costume Figures

Inside the hall, tall costume figures stood in rows. Some had glowing eyes. Some wore torn capes. One had a sheet over its head.

The kids froze for a breath.

"Nobody move fast," Maya said. "Let us see what they are."

Priya spotted a light switch beside the door and flicked it on. The hall filled with yellow light.

"Mannequins!" Leo said.

The figures were not ghosts at all. They were costumes on stands: ghosts, knights, wizards, and dancing skeletons made from cardboard.

Finn laughed so hard he had to sit down. "The haunted castle has a costume closet."

Behind the last row, they found a stack of old posters. At last, everything made sense.

## The Big Reveal: Solving the Mystery

The biggest poster showed a smiling pumpkin and bright orange letters.

**The Castle of Clues: A Halloween Maze for Families.**

"It was a Halloween attraction," Priya said. "A pretend mystery castle."

"And then people forgot," Finn said.

"That explains the rumors," Maya said. "Someone saw the red light or the costumes and ran home with half the story."

They took notes, drew a quick map, and walked back out before the afternoon light faded.

When they reached town, Maya's aunt helped them tell the mayor what they had found. Soon the old rumors began to fade.

"You solved this by checking carefully," the mayor said. "That matters."

The kids felt proud. They had not chased ghosts. They had followed clues.

## The Mystery Explained

The next weekend, the town opened the castle gate in daylight. Grown-ups fixed the loose steps, swept the halls, and put signs beside the safest rooms.

The children returned with their families and showed everyone the clues in order: the rusty gate, the paper moon, the hidden shelf, the red bulb, the costumes, and the poster.

"A mystery feels friendlier when you look closely," Leo told his little cousin.

"And when you stay together," Priya added.

That autumn, the castle became a gentle mystery walk for the town. The costumes were still surprising, but now they made people laugh.

The castle on the hill still had quiet corners. The children knew what was behind them: dust, costumes, old stories, and the bright feeling of solving a puzzle with friends.
