## Story

## Meet the Mischievous Dragon

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there was a dragon named Max who loved attention. He stole shiny spoons, tied ribbons around doorknobs, and puffed tiny smoke rings into the laundry.

The knights tried to stop him, but Max always slipped away. If they called out, he flapped higher. If they chased him, he thought it was a game.

"He is not trying to hurt anyone," said Jack, a young squire who polished shields and listened carefully. "He is trying to make someone play."

The captain frowned. "Then he needs a better game."

Jack smiled. "I can try."

## Jack Takes on the Challenge

Jack watched Max for three days. He noticed that the dragon visited the courtyard whenever the bells rang, copied the knights when they marched, and laughed hardest when someone laughed with him.

Jack did not want to fight Max. He wanted to understand him.

He filled a notebook with ideas.

- Max likes shiny things.
- Max likes soft places to land.
- Max likes games with rules, even if he pretends he does not.

"If we give him a game that helps the castle," Jack said, "maybe he will stop making messy ones."

The cook handed him a basket of old ribbons. The laundress gave him worn pillows. The blacksmith gave him bells that were too bent for the tower.

Jack set to work.

## Jack's Clever Attempts

Jack's first idea was a shiny sorting game. He placed spoons, buttons, and bottle caps in three baskets.

"Put each shiny thing where it belongs!" Jack called.

Max sorted two spoons, then wore the third one on his nose.

Jack wrote in his notebook: **Needs more moving.**

His second idea was a ribbon maze across the courtyard. Max was supposed to follow the red ribbon, then the blue one, then the yellow one.

Max followed the red ribbon, wrapped himself in the blue one, and sneezed the yellow one into a fountain.

Jack wrote: **Needs more laughing.**

His third idea used the bent bells. Max had to ring them in order to make a tune. This time, Max listened. He rang one bell with his claw, then another with his tail.

"Again?" Max asked.

Jack grinned. "Again."

## Brainpower Wins

Jack's latest invention was his best one yet. He called it Pillow Landing.

He spread old pillows across the practice field and tied bright ribbons between safe landing spots. Each spot had a bell. The goal was simple: swoop, land softly, ring the bell, and bow.

When everything was ready, Max landed on the wall and tilted his head.

"Is this a trick?" the dragon asked.

"No," Jack said. "It is a game. But it only works if you follow the rules."

Max narrowed one golden eye. "Are there points?"

"Ten for a soft landing. Five for ringing a bell. Twenty for not knocking over the laundry."

Max puffed a smoke ring. "I accept."

_Swoosh!_ Max glided down and landed belly-first in the pillows. Bells jingled. Feathers floated. Jack laughed, and this time Max laughed too.

"Again?" Max asked.

"Again," Jack said. "But this time, no feathers in the soup."

## What Changed

Max still liked jokes, but Jack helped him aim them better.

Instead of stealing spoons, Max polished them until they sparkled. Instead of puffing smoke into laundry, he warmed towels on rainy days. Instead of tying ribbons around doors, he tied them around birthday gifts.

One afternoon, Max nudged the pillow pile with his snout.

"Next time, may I help plan the game?" he asked.

"Only if it catches trouble before trouble starts," Jack said.

From then on, the squire and the dragon solved problems side by side, one clever idea at a time.
