## Story

Bella's paw scraped against something hard beneath the fresh snow.

The Saint Bernard dug carefully, and her breath caught.

A compass.

The brass case was scratched and dented. She would recognize it anywhere.

Timmy's compass.

The boy who had moved away last month, the one who used to share his breakfast with her every morning.

Her chest tightened.

He must have dropped it before leaving.

Beyond the village, the mountain pierced the sky like a giant's tooth.

Gray clouds swallowed its peak.

Wind rushed down the slopes, sharp with ice.

Timmy's new village waited somewhere on the far side of that summit.

Bella's stomach dropped.

She had seen rescue teams struggle on those cliffs.

She had heard stories of snowstorms that appeared without warning.

But she remembered how Timmy had cried when his grandfather gave him this compass.

How he had promised to treasure it forever.

Bella picked up the compass gently and turned toward the trail.

At the trailhead, Bella adjusted her red rescue vest.

Dried meat tucked in one pocket.

A small blanket in another.

She had carried emergency supplies on mountain rescues before, but always with a team.

Never this high.

The path twisted upward through pine trees, then disappeared into bare rock and ice.

Her muscles tensed.

Her paws felt clumsy and too big.

*What if I slip?

What if I lose the trail?*

She remembered Timmy's last words: *You are the bravest dog in the whole world, Bella.*

Her throat burned.

*If only he knew the truth.*

But she thought of his face when he discovered the compass missing.

How his shoulders had slumped.

How he had searched his pockets three times, hoping he was wrong.

Bella took one step onto the trail.

Then another.

The village dropped away below her.

Wind tugged at her fur.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her paws kept moving.

The compass thumped softly in her vest with each step, like a second heartbeat.

Two hours later, the trail ended.

A wooden bridge stretched across a misty gorge.

Ice coated every plank until they gleamed like glass.

Far below, mist twisted around wet rocks.

The bridge swayed and creaked.

Bella's legs locked.

She could not move forward.

She could hardly breathe.

*Turn back.

This is too risky.

You are just a village dog.*

But then she pictured Timmy in his new home, searching for the compass his grandfather had given him.

Wondering where it had gone.

Bella forced one trembling paw onto the bridge.

The ice was slicker than she expected.

Her paw slid sideways.

The bridge lurched.

Terror flooded through her chest.

She pulled her paw back, then pushed it forward again.

One small movement.

Nothing more.

Do not think about the gorge.

Do not think about slipping.

Just the next paw.

Another step.

The wood groaned beneath her weight.

Wind tugged at her fur.

One more paw.

One more.

Her front legs reached solid rock.

Then her back legs.

She crouched on the far side, shaking so hard her teeth chattered.

"That was incredible!" said a bright voice.

Bella jumped.

A young mountain goat with tiny curved horns stood on a boulder, eyes shining.

"I am Pip," the goat said, hopping down.

"I watched you cross that bridge. Your whole body was shaking, but you did not stop."

"I was very worried," Bella admitted.

"Exactly," Pip said.

"That is what made it brave. What are you doing up here?"

Bella explained about Timmy and the compass.

Pip's expression grew thoughtful.

"The trail gets tricky from here," Pip said.

"Hidden ice. Paths that look safe but are not. But I have walked this mountain my whole life. I will show you the way."

Warmth spread through Bella's chest.

She had a helper now.

Together they traveled higher.

Pip pointed out safe routes around ice patches and showed her which ledges would hold her weight.

The summit emerged from the clouds, closer now.

Worry still fluttered in Bella's stomach, but it felt smaller with Pip beside her.

The storm hit without warning.

One moment, blue sky.

The next, gray cloud.

Wind rushed down the mountain in powerful gusts.

Snow swirled from every direction, so thick Bella could barely see Pip standing right next to her.

"Shelter!"

Pip bleated.

They dove behind a massive boulder, pressing close.

But the storm only grew stronger.

Fresh snow covered the trail completely.

Bella could not tell which direction led safely onward.

Her courage wobbled.

"I cannot," Bella whispered.

"I am not strong enough for this. I never was. This was foolish!"

The compass in her vest felt impossibly heavy.

She was just a village dog who had gotten lucky on rescues.

What made her think she could cross a mountain without help?

"We should go back," she whispered.

The blizzard whooshed around the boulder.

Pip pressed against her, sharing warmth.

"Why did you start this ascent?" he asked softly.

"To return Timmy's compass."

"Does he still need it?"

"Yes."

"Then nothing has changed," Pip said.

"You have been worried this whole time, Bella. But you kept going anyway. The worry is still here. So is your courage. They can both be real."

Bella lifted her head.

She could not see the summit through the swirling snow.

But she felt the compass against her chest, steady and sure.

Timmy still needed it.

That was still true.

Her worry was still real too.

It still made her legs shake and her heart race.

But maybe she could carry both at the same time.

"Together?" Bella asked.

"Together," Pip promised.

They stood and faced the snow.

Pip used his knowledge to find the buried trail.

Bella tested each step before trusting her weight.

When wind pushed hard, they leaned on each other.

Every muscle ached.

Her paws went numb.

But she pictured Timmy's smile with each careful step.

One paw forward.

Then another.

Wind pushed her backward.

She pushed forward anyway.

Worry told her to stop.

She moved anyway.

And then, silence.

They stood on the summit.

Below them stretched a sunny valley dotted with green meadows and colorful rooftops.

The storm had stayed on the mountain's far side.

The gentle slope down took less than an hour.

Pip led Bella straight to a cottage with blue shutters.

Before Bella could bark, the door flew open.

"Bella!" Timmy shouted.

He ran into her, arms wrapped tight around her neck.

Bella's whole body wiggled with joy.

She carefully removed the compass from her vest and placed it in Timmy's palm.

His eyes went wide.

"My compass! You crossed the mountain to bring it back?"

Timmy hugged them both and brought them inside for warm soup.

As Bella rested by the fireplace, watching Timmy polish his grandfather's compass, something felt different inside her.

She had been worried during the entire ascent.

More worried than she had ever been.

But she had crossed the mountain anyway.

Real bravery was not about feeling fearless.

It was about choosing what is right, even when your legs shake and your heart pounds.

The courage had lived inside her all along.

She just needed to believe in herself enough to take that first difficult step.

And then the next.

And the next.
