## Story

Eddie the young gray elephant heard crying.

He stood in a sunny jungle clearing, his wide ears tilted forward.

The sound drifted from behind the old stone wall, where vines hung thick and twisted.

Eddie pressed his trunk against the warm stones.

"Hello?"

The crying stopped.

A tiny voice answered from inside.

"Please help us!"

Eddie found a crack between two stones.

Beyond it stretched a passage, narrow and dim.

He could barely see past the entrance.

His trunk curled tight.

He could turn around right now.

Walk back to the meadow where his friends were playing.

But someone needed help.

Eddie looked around the clearing.

A firefly lantern hung from a nearby tree.

He lifted it gently with his trunk.

Then he grabbed some peanuts from his supply pouch and tucked them close.

"I am strong," Eddie whispered to himself.

"I am gentle. I never forget my way home."

He turned toward the opening.

The stones felt cool against his skin.

The passage smelled like damp earth and old moss.

Eddie raised the lantern and stepped inside, counting each footfall.

Left turn.

Right turn.

Straight for twenty paces.

His memory was excellent.

He would remember every step.

The walls grew closer with each turn.

Eddie squeezed forward.

The stones pressed against his shoulders.

His trunk bent uncomfortably.

He pushed ahead, but the space became too tight.

He could not move forward.

He could barely move at all.

Eddie wiggled his shoulders.

He twisted his body.

The walls held him firm on both sides.

His breath came in quick puffs.

"I cannot do this," Eddie said aloud.

"I should turn back."

But he was squeezed so tightly that even backing up seemed impossible.

"Do not give up!" squeaked a voice near his feet.

Eddie looked down.

A tiny gray mouse sat on a stone ledge, her whiskers twitching in the lantern light.

"My name is Mia," the mouse said.

"You came to help, yes?"

"I wanted to," Eddie admitted.

His ears drooped.

"But I am too big for this passage."

Mia scurried closer, her small paws tapping on the stone.

"I know another route through the tight spots. But I need your help first. My family is behind rocks deeper inside. I have been trying to move them for three days, but I am far too small."

Eddie felt something shift inside his chest.

He was not alone in this passage anymore.

"If you guide me through," Eddie said slowly, "I will help you move those rocks."

Mia smiled, her tiny teeth showing.

"Tuck your trunk forward first, then shift your left shoulder. There is a wider chamber just ahead."

Eddie followed her instructions carefully.

Inch by inch, he worked himself free from the tight spot.

The passage opened into a space where he could breathe more easily.

"This way," Mia said, running ahead with the confidence of someone who knew these tunnels well.

They moved deeper together.

Mia showed Eddie which turns to take, which loose stones to avoid stepping on.

Her knowledge and his strength made a good team.

Then the ground shook beneath them.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Stones tumbled behind them with heavy thuds that echoed through the passage.

Eddie spun around.

Where the tunnel had been open, now there was only a wall of fallen rocks.

Their way back was completely blocked.

Eddie felt his chest grow tight.

His legs trembled.

The lantern shook in his trunk, making the shadows dance wildly on the walls.

"We cannot get out," Eddie said.

His voice came out shaky and small.

"I cannot do this anymore, Mia. This is too hard. Everything is too hard."

Mia climbed onto a nearby rock so she could look Eddie in the eye.

"I am worried too," she said gently.

"But my family is still waiting in that chamber. My little brothers and sisters have been calling for three days. I cannot move the rocks alone."

She paused, then added softly, "You can."

Eddie looked at the fallen stones blocking their exit, then back at Mia.

"Being brave does not mean you are never worried," Mia said.

"It means you keep going anyway. Especially when someone is counting on you."

Eddie closed his eyes.

He thought about Mia's family, waiting in the chamber beyond.

He thought about his own strength, the strength he had almost forgotten.

"I never forget," Eddie said quietly.

Then louder: "I never forget my promises. I never forget the way forward. And I never forget how strong I really am."

He opened his eyes and looked at Mia with new determination.

"Show me where your family is."

Mia led him around two more corners.

There, in a small underground chamber, Eddie saw the pile of rocks.

Behind them, he heard soft squeaking voices.

"We are here!" Mia called out.

"Help has come!"

Eddie set down the lantern carefully.

He examined each rock with his trunk, testing their weight and how they fit together.

Some were loose.

Others were wedged tight.

He would have to move them one at a time, slowly and gently.

Eddie wrapped his trunk around the first rock.

He pulled slowly, steadily, using all his strength.

The rock shifted.

He set it aside with care.

Then the next rock.

And the next.

His trunk grew tired.

His shoulders ached.

Dust coated his gray skin.

But Eddie did not stop.

He thought about Mia, who had been trying alone for so long.

He thought about her family, waiting on the other side.

One more rock.

Then another.

Finally, a gap appeared between the stones.

Small mouse faces peeked through, blinking in the lantern light.

"You did it!" Mia squeaked, jumping up and down.

Mia's family poured through the opening.

Seven little mice and two older ones gathered around Eddie's feet, all squeaking their thanks at once.

"We thought no one would ever come," Mia's mother said, her voice thick with relief.

"Eddie did not give up on us," Mia said proudly.

"Even when things got really hard."

Mia's father twitched his nose thoughtfully.

"There is another way out of these tunnels. We found it days ago, but we could not reach it past all those rocks. Follow us now!"

The mouse family led Eddie through the chamber to a wider tunnel he had not noticed before.

This passage sloped gently upward.

Fresh air drifted down from above, carrying the scent of flowers and sunshine.

Eddie followed the mice up and up.

The passage grew brighter with each step.

He heard birds singing somewhere ahead.

Then he stepped out into warm sunlight.

They stood in a beautiful jungle clearing on the other side of the ancient wall.

Flowers bloomed in every color.

A clear stream bubbled over smooth stones nearby.

"You found a whole new place," Eddie said with wonder in his voice.

Mia climbed onto Eddie's trunk, balancing perfectly.

"We found it together. And you know what? You are much braver than you thought you were."

Eddie smiled, feeling the warmth of the sun on his back.

She was right.

He had wanted to give up so many times in those tunnels.

The passage had been too tight.

The rocks had seemed too heavy.

The way back had been blocked completely.

But he had not given up.

And now Mia's whole family was free and safe.

"Thank you, Eddie," all the mice squeaked together, their voices mixing into one grateful chorus.

Eddie looked back at the passage opening, then at his new friends gathered around him.

He had been worried and tired and ready to quit more than once.

But he had kept going anyway.

Not because he was never worried.

Not because it had been easy.

But because someone had needed him.

Because it was the right thing to do.

And that, Eddie realized, was what being brave really meant.
