## Story

Maya's stomach dropped the moment she saw it.

The zipline cable stretched across the valley like a gleaming thread, so long she could not spot where it ended.

It disappeared into clouds that drifted past the mountain summit, white and fluffy as cotton candy.

Around her, families laughed and pointed at riders zipping down the line, their excited shouts echoing off distant peaks.

"Who is ready for the ride of their life?" called the guide, a sun-weathered woman with a compass clipped to her belt.

Maya's brother Lucas's hand shot up.

"Me! I am going first!"

Her little sister Zara tugged on Maya's sleeve.

"This is amazing! We are so high up!"

Maya nodded, but her mouth had gone dry.

She inched closer to the platform's edge and peeked down.

The valley floor lay so far below that pine trees looked like tiny green specks.

A ribbon of river wound through the landscape, thin as dental floss.

Her heart thumped hard against her ribs.

Lucas buckled into his harness, flashing everyone a confident grin.

The guide checked his clips, nodded, and stepped back.

Lucas grabbed the handles and launched himself into empty air with a whoop that made Maya's knees wobble.

She watched him shrink smaller and smaller until he vanished into the clouds.

"You are next, sweetheart," her mom said gently.

Maya's legs felt like overcooked spaghetti, but she forced them toward the platform anyway.

The guide helped her step into the harness, pulling straps snug around her waist and shoulders.

Each buckle clicked with a metallic sound that seemed too final.

"These cables are tested every single morning," the guide said, giving the line a confident tug.

"Strong enough to hold a car."

Maya stepped onto the wooden platform.

Wind whistled through the cables overhead, making them hum a low note that sounded almost alive.

She wrapped her fingers around the cold metal handles.

Just push off, she told herself.

Just like Lucas did.

Her hands shook so badly the whole cable trembled.

From up here, she could see mountain peaks jutting into the sky in every direction.

Forests spread below like a rumpled green blanket.

A hawk circled on invisible currents, riding the wind without effort.

"Whenever you are ready," the guide said.

"Take your time."

Maya leaned forward.

Her heart hammered.

She took a breath, preparing to push off.

Then she made the mistake of looking straight down.

The ground dropped away into nothing.

Her vision swam.

Her whole body locked up like a rusty gate.

"I cannot," she whispered.

She stumbled backward onto solid ground, her face burning.

Behind her, another family waited their turn.

Down in the valley, Lucas waved his arms, probably wondering what was taking so long.

Zara's smile had faded into worry.

Maya fumbled with her harness buckles.

"I am sorry. I thought I could do it, but I cannot."

The guide crouched beside her.

"You know what I have learned running this zipline?"

Maya shook her head, blinking hard.

"The bravest riders are the ones who feel worried. Being worried does not mean you are not brave. It means you are brave enough to try."

Maya sank onto a flat boulder near the platform.

She watched rider after rider take their turns.

A teenager zipped past, laughing.

A dad went next, then his wife.

Then something caught Maya's eye.

A girl who looked even younger than Zara stepped onto the platform.

Her pigtails bounced as she walked.

The guide helped buckle her in, and the little girl nodded seriously.

Maya leaned forward, curious.

The girl's eyes squeezed shut tight.

Her hand came up, three fingers raised.

She counted silently: one, two, three. Then she pushed off without hesitation.

Her delighted squeal echoed across the valley.

A spark flickered in Maya's chest.

She had been thinking about the entire ride: the height, the speed, the long view below.

But that little girl had made it simple.

Just count to three.

One small moment instead of one giant leap.

Maya was good at breaking big problems into smaller pieces.

When she had wanted to build a treehouse, she had tackled it board by board.

When her math homework seemed impossible, she had solved it one problem at a time.

Maybe this was the same thing.

She stood up, brushing dirt from her shorts.

"I want to try again."

The guide's face brightened.

"That is the spirit. What is your plan?"

"I will focus on small steps," Maya said, her voice steadier now.

"Not the whole ride. Just one tiny thing at a time."

Zara bounced over and grabbed her hand.

"I will stand right next to you! I can hold your hand until you have to go!"

Lucas had hiked back up the trail, breathing hard.

"Here is a tip," he panted.

"Do not look down at the ground. Look at the clouds ahead. They are incredible."

The guide nodded.

"Smart advice," the guide said.

"And here is another tool: when worry rises, take three slow breaths. In through your nose, out through your mouth. It tells your brain you are safe."

Maya stepped back into the harness.

Her pulse still raced, but now her mind felt clear and focused.

She had a plan: a real, step-by-step plan.

First step: get to the platform.

She stepped up, feeling rough wood under her sneakers.

Check.

Second step: hold Zara's hand.

Her sister's warm fingers squeezed hers tight.

Check.

Third step: breathe.

Maya pulled air slowly through her nose, feeling it fill her lungs.

She let it out through her mouth, imagining her worry flowing away with it.

In again.

Out again.

The trembling in her hands eased.

Check.

Fourth step: look at something beautiful.

She lifted her eyes to the clouds drifting past mountain peaks.

Sunlight painted their edges gold.

They looked like floating treasures.

Check.

Fifth step: count to three.

"You have got this, Maya," Zara whispered.

Maya gripped the handles.

"Three."

She kept her gaze locked on those golden clouds.

"Two."

Her heart pounded, but her mind stayed focused.

"One."

She released Zara's hand and pushed off with both feet.

The platform vanished.

Wind rushed in her ears.

Her stomach did a flip.

Then something magical happened.

The worry changed like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly.

Pure joy flooded through her.

She was flying!

Actually soaring through the air!

The valley rushed up in a blur of green and gold.

The cable sang above her head.

Her heart felt like it might burst, not from worry, but from wonder.

Laughter bubbled up from her chest, ringing across the mountain.

The landing platform appeared ahead.

The guide there helped slow her down, and Maya's feet touched the ground.

Her legs wobbled, but she had never felt stronger.

"Maya! You did it!"

Zara came zooming down next, wrapping her in a hug that nearly knocked them both over.

Lucas appeared and lifted his hand for a thunderous high-five.

"That was amazing! You were going so fast!"

Her parents landed moments later, wrapping her in a hug that smelled like pine trees and happiness.

"I am so proud of you," her mom said.

"Not just for riding the zipline, but for trying again when it felt impossible."

Maya looked back up at the summit, impossibly high above.

She had been worried.

She had stepped back.

She had tried again using every tool she could think of.

And she had succeeded.

A grin spread across her face as she thought about all the other adventures waiting out there in the world: rope bridges to cross, caves to explore, trails to hike.

She could not wait to find them.
