## Story

## The Gentle Dragon

Once upon a time, a gentle dragon lived in a cave near the beach. He liked the sound of waves, the sparkle of shells, and the way warm sand held his footprints.

The dragon had a cozy cave, a smooth pebble pillow, and a shelf of sea glass. Still, he often wished for company.

He watched children play catch from far away. He wanted to join, but he knew a dragon running quickly across the sand might startle them.

So he waited near his cave and practiced rolling round stones gently with his nose.

## A Curious Encounter

One sunny day, a bright beach ball bounced away from the children and rolled near the dragon's cave.

The dragon leaned out and stopped it with one careful claw.

The children froze.

"That is our ball," said a girl named Mia, holding her brother's hand.

The dragon nudged it back across the sand. He stayed low and moved slowly.

"Thank you," Mia said.

The dragon smiled a small, sandy smile.

"Would you like to roll it back?" asked her brother.

The dragon's tail tapped once. That meant yes.

## A New Name for the Dragon

The children started with tiny rolls. Mia rolled the ball to the dragon. The dragon rolled it back. Her brother counted each pass.

Soon everyone was laughing.

"He is very good with beach balls," Mia said.

"Beach Ball Dragon," said her brother.

The dragon lifted his head proudly. He liked the name. It sounded friendly, round, and bright.

The children asked their parents before playing closer to the cave. The parents watched from the picnic blanket and waved to the dragon, who waved back with one careful claw.

## A Token of Friendship

At the end of the day, Mia noticed the dragon looking at the ball after every roll.

"You like it," she said.

The dragon nodded.

"We still need to take it home," Mia said, "but we can bring it back when we visit."

The dragon thought for a moment. Then he picked up a piece of smooth blue sea glass and placed it beside the ball.

"A trade for remembering," Mia said.

She tied a ribbon around the sea glass and promised to bring the ball on their next beach day.

## Fun in the Sun with Beach Ball Dragon

The children came back the next weekend with the beach ball, a kite, and a bucket for sandcastles.

Beach Ball Dragon learned to pat sand gently into towers. The children learned that dragon claws could draw excellent moat lines. When the kite dipped too low, the dragon stood still and let the string pass safely over his horns.

They made rules for every game:

Roll, do not throw, near the cave.

Ask before touching.

Pause if anyone feels nervous.

The rules made the games better because everyone knew how to play.

## The Cave Feels Full

Beach Ball Dragon still lived in his cave, but it no longer felt empty.

On quiet days, he lined up shells for the next sandcastle. On windy days, he watched for kites. On sunny days, he listened for Mia calling his name across the sand.

## The First Meeting

The first meeting had been careful, and that mattered.

The children had not rushed toward the dragon. The dragon had not rushed toward the children. They had given each other time to see what was true: nobody wanted to frighten anyone.

## The Favorite Sound

By summer, Beach Ball Dragon had a favorite sound.

It was not thunder, treasure, or waves against stone.

It was the soft bounce of a beach ball rolling over sand, followed by friends laughing together.
