## Story

## Music in the Cave

Lily, Max, and Sam were building a sandcastle near the rocks when they found a small wooden marker in the sand.

It had an arrow carved into it.

"A treasure sign!" Max said.

"Or a beach sign," Sam said. "We should follow it carefully."

The arrow pointed toward a cave at the edge of the shore. Soft music drifted out from inside.

The children stopped at the entrance.

"Hello?" Lily called.

The music paused. A mermaid with a blue-green tail peeked from a pool inside the cave.

"Hello," she said. "I am Marina. Are you looking for something?"

"Treasure," Max said.

Marina smiled. "Then you found the right cave. I have been trying to solve this trail all morning."

## A New Teammate

Marina showed them a flat stone with another carved arrow.

"The clues were left by Captain Coral," she said. "She hid useful beach treasures for anyone patient enough to find them."

"Useful treasures?" Sam asked.

"That is what the first clue said," Marina replied.

Lily knelt beside the stone. "This arrow points to the tide pools."

They walked together, with Marina swimming through the shallow channel beside the rocks.

Max hurried ahead, but Sam called, "Wait. If we go too fast, we might miss the next clue."

Max slowed down. "Good point."

Marina tapped the water with her tail. "A careful treasure hunter is a happy treasure hunter."

## The Clues

At the tide pools, Lily spotted a shell with a star scratched on it.

Under the shell was a rolled piece of seaweed paper.

Sam read it aloud. "Two palms stand tall. Count ten steps toward the sea."

The children found the two palm trees. They counted together.

"One, two, three," said Lily.

"Four, five, six," said Max.

"Seven, eight, nine, ten," finished Sam.

At the tenth step, Marina noticed a bottle tucked behind a rock. Inside was a picture clue: a big round stone, a curved line of shells, and an X.

"I know that stone," Marina said. "It is near the quiet part of the beach."

## The Chest

They found the round stone just where Marina said it would be.

A curved line of shells led away from it.

At the end of the shell line, Max's shovel tapped something hard.

Tap.

He dug gently. Lily and Sam brushed sand away with their hands. Marina splashed water over the spot to loosen the sand.

Soon they uncovered a small wooden chest.

"Ready?" Lily asked.

"Ready," said Sam.

They opened it together.

Inside were shiny coins, smooth shells, bright beads, and a folded note.

Marina read the note.

"These treasures are for making something beautiful. Share them well."

## Something Better Than Gold

The children looked at the coins.

They looked at the beads.

They looked at Marina.

"We could make a necklace," Lily said.

"For Marina," Max added.

"And bracelets for all of us," Sam said. "Then we all remember the hunt."

So they sat in the shade and sorted the treasure. Marina chose blue beads that matched the sea. Lily chose yellow shells. Max chose silver coins with tiny holes in the middle. Sam chose green beads like sea glass.

They made Marina a necklace first. Then they made three beach bracelets.

When they finished, Marina touched her new necklace and smiled.

"Captain Coral was right," she said. "This treasure was useful."

Lily held up her bracelet. "It helped us make something together."

The tide began to creep closer, so the children packed the empty chest back into the sand with the note inside for the next careful treasure hunters.

Marina waved from the water.

"Same beach tomorrow?" Max asked.

"Same beach," said Marina. "Maybe Captain Coral left more clues."

The children walked back with sandy feet, bright bracelets, and a story they would remember long after the waves smoothed the shore.
