## Story

## Otters by the Sea

The otter family lived where the river met the sea.

Mama Otter knew the best fishing rocks. Papa Otter knew where the waves curled softly. The little otters knew how to tumble, splash, and make each other laugh.

One morning, the youngest otter watched Mama dive and pop back up with a fish.

"Can I help today?" the little otter asked.

Mama smiled. "You can learn near me."

Papa pointed to the calm water. "First, floating. Then paddling. Then short dives."

The little otters lined up, whiskers twitching with excitement.

## Summer Practice

Every day, the little otters learned something new.

They practiced floating on their backs. They practiced rolling over in the water. They practiced diving for smooth stones before trying to catch anything slippery.

"I got a pebble!" called one little otter.

"A very fine pebble," said Papa.

When the waves were gentle, the family rode them toward shore. When the waves were too bouncy, they played seaweed tag in the shallows.

At sunset, they shared dinner on a flat rock. The little otters told big stories about tiny dives.

"My pebble was almost as fast as a fish," said the youngest.

Mama laughed. "Then tomorrow you may be ready for a shell."

## Storm Day

One afternoon, clouds covered the sky.

Rain tapped the roof of their den. The sea rolled too roughly for play.

"No waves today," Papa said.

The little otters sighed.

Mama pulled dry reeds into the middle of the den. "Then we need a den game."

They built a pretend boat from reeds and driftwood. They made a sail from a flat piece of bark. The youngest otter sat inside and called, "Captain coming through."

They took turns steering the boat across the den floor while rain drummed outside.

By bedtime, the little otters had forgotten to be disappointed.

## Goodbye to Summer

The days slowly grew cooler.

The family still visited the shore, but the sun went down earlier. The little otters noticed leaves floating in the river.

"Is summer leaving?" asked the youngest.

"For now," Mama said. "Seasons take turns."

The little otters did not like saying goodbye to long sunny days, so Papa suggested one last summer picnic.

They ate fish on the flat rock. They played one gentle wave game. They chose their favorite pebble from the shore and carried it home.

"This pebble remembers summer," said the youngest.

## The Pebble Shelf

Back in the den, Mama made a small shelf from driftwood.

Each little otter placed a pebble on it.

There was a gray pebble for floating practice, a white pebble for the first shell dive, and a speckled pebble for the rainy-day boat.

"When summer comes again, we will add more," Papa said.

The youngest otter curled beside Mama and yawned.

"Tomorrow can we practice in the river?"

"Yes," Mama said. "The sea is not the only place to learn."

Rain whispered softly outside. Inside the den, the otter family slept beside their shelf of summer memories.
