## Story

## Planning the Party

Sammy the seal had a birthday coming, and his friends wanted to surprise him.

Max the dog spread a map of the beach on the sand.

"Sammy loves the water," Max said. "Let us have the party near the tide pools."

Maya Rabbit clapped her paws. "I can bring carrot cake."

Leo Lion lifted a basket. "I can bring sandwiches."

Pip Squirrel held up a string of paper flags. "I made decorations."

They chose a flat place above the waterline where the waves would not reach. Then they made a list: blanket, cups, snacks, games, flags, and one birthday shell for Sammy to wear.

"No one tells Sammy," Max whispered.

Everyone nodded.

## Getting Ready

The next morning, the friends arrived early.

Maya set out carrot cake squares. Leo stacked sandwiches under a clean cloth. Pip tied flags between two pieces of driftwood.

Birdie brought a beach ball.

"For after snacks," she said.

Max drew a big circle in the sand for a game of shell toss.

The picnic looked bright and cheerful.

"Sammy will love this," Maya said.

Just then, a gust of wind rushed across the beach.

The flags snapped. The cups rolled. One napkin flew straight into Leo's mane.

## Wind Trouble

"Catch the cups!" Max barked.

Everyone ran in different directions. Pip grabbed two cups. Birdie caught a napkin in her beak. Maya sat on the blanket before it could flap away.

Leo pulled the napkin from his mane and laughed. "The beach wants to play too."

"We need heavier corners," Pip said.

They placed smooth stones on the blanket. They tied the flags lower so the wind could pass over them. They tucked the sandwiches inside the basket until it was time to eat.

The party looked different now, but it still looked happy.

Then three gulls landed nearby and eyed the cake.

## Guarding the Snacks

"Shoo," said Max.

The gulls hopped closer.

Maya frowned. "They are hungry too, but this cake is for Sammy."

Leo moved the cake into a covered tin. Pip sprinkled a few plain crumbs far away from the picnic blanket.

The gulls followed the crumbs, pecked happily, and forgot about the cake.

"Snack problem solved," Birdie said.

At last, Sammy appeared over the dune.

"Surprise!" everyone shouted.

Sammy's whiskers twitched with delight. "For me?"

"For you," said Max.

## Rain on the Party

Sammy had just put on his birthday shell when clouds rolled across the sun.

Plip.

Plop.

Rain dotted the sand.

Pip looked at the cake tin. "Oh no."

Sammy glanced at his friends' worried faces. "I like rain."

"You do?" Maya asked.

Sammy slid happily across the wet sand. "It makes the beach shiny."

That gave everyone an idea.

They opened umbrellas, tucked the food under the driest one, and made a rain game. Whoever caught five raindrops in a cup got to choose the next song.

Sammy chose a silly birthday song with three extra claps.

## Sammy's Favorite Part

Soon the rain stopped.

The flags were crooked. The blanket had sandy corners. The shell toss circle had washed away.

Sammy looked at all of it and smiled.

"This is the best party," he said.

"Even with the wind?" asked Pip.

"Even with the gulls?" asked Leo.

"Even with the rain?" asked Maya.

"Especially with the rain," Sammy said. "You kept changing the party so we could still be together."

They ate cake from the covered tin. They played beach ball on the damp sand. When the sun came back, it made tiny sparkles on every raindrop.

Sammy wore his birthday shell all afternoon.
