## Story

## The Crumbling Castle

Tommy loved nearly everything about the beach.

He loved the warm sand under his feet. He loved the splashy waves. He loved searching for shells with his brother and sister.

But he did not love building sandcastles.

Every castle Tommy made tumbled down.

He filled his bucket, turned it over, and patted the top. The tower cracked.

He stacked damp sand with both hands. The wall slid sideways.

He dug a moat around the outside. The whole castle leaned into the moat with a soft plop.

Tommy dropped his shovel beside him.

"I am just bad at this," he said.

His dad looked over from the beach blanket. "You are still learning. Take a break, then try one small part."

Tommy nodded, but he still felt cross.

Then a breeze rushed across the beach and spun a tiny swirl of sand beside his bucket.

Out of the swirl stepped a tall man in a sandy brown robe. His hat was shaped like a bucket, and a silver shell shone at the end of his wand.

"Good afternoon," said the man. "I am Sandor."

Tommy blinked. "Are you a wizard?"

"A sand wizard," Sandor said. "Mostly I know about buckets, water, patience, and snacks. The snacks are very important."

Tommy laughed before he could stop himself.

## Sandor's First Rule

Sandor knelt beside Tommy's fallen castle.

"This sand is too dry," Sandor said. "Dry sand likes to run away. Wet sand likes to stick together."

He scooped sand into Tommy's bucket, then added a little seawater.

"Now press it down," Sandor said.

Tommy pressed the sand with both hands.

"Harder?"

"Firmly," Sandor said. "Not angry-hard. Pancake-hard."

Tommy pressed again. Sandor tapped the bucket three times with his shell wand.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

"The magic taps help me remember to wait," Sandor said.

Tommy turned the bucket over. He lifted it slowly.

A tower stood in the sand.

It was not perfect. One side was lumpy. But it stayed up.

Tommy's mouth opened wide. "It worked!"

"You worked," said Sandor. "The bucket helped."

## Walls, Shells, and Windows

Tommy wanted to build a whole castle at once, but Sandor held up one finger.

"One tower first," he said. "Then one wall. Then another tower."

They made four towers. Tommy packed each bucket carefully and waited before lifting it.

Then they built walls between them. Sandor showed Tommy how to pat the sides smooth with the flat of his shovel.

"Can we add windows?" Tommy asked.

"Of course," said Sandor. "Small details make a castle feel alive."

Tommy used a shell to press tiny windows into the towers. He used bits of seaweed for flags and smooth pebbles for a path.

His brother and sister came over to look.

"That looks like a real castle," said his sister.

Tommy stood a little taller.

"Sandor helped me," he said.

Sandor bowed. "Tommy did the building."

## A Sandy City

After lunch, Tommy tried something bigger.

"Could we make a town?" he asked.

"A town needs planning," Sandor said. "Where should people walk?"

Tommy drew a road in the sand with his finger. He placed a round mound in the middle.

"This can be the fountain," he said.

They built little houses along the road. Tommy made a shop with a shell roof and a tiny school with pebble steps. His brother added a bridge across the moat. His sister made a garden with bits of green seaweed.

Once, Tommy's shop wall cracked.

He started to groan, then stopped.

"More wet sand?" he asked.

"That is what I would try," said Sandor.

Tommy fixed the wall. It was stronger the second time.

## Goodbye for Now

When the sun dipped lower, Tommy's parents began packing the towels.

Sandor brushed sand from his robe.

"I must go before the tide reaches my boots," he said.

"Will you come back?" Tommy asked.

"Whenever you build carefully, I will feel nearby."

Sandor handed Tommy a small white shell.

"This is not a magic shell," he said. "It is a remembering shell. It remembers wet sand, steady hands, and trying again."

Tommy held it carefully.

"Thank you," he said.

A breeze spun around Sandor's feet. The sand lifted in a soft circle, and when it settled, the sand wizard was gone.

Tommy ran to his family.

"Look what I made!" he called.

His parents came to see the castle town, the fountain, the bridge, and the little school with pebble steps.

"You kept going," Dad said.

Tommy smiled at the standing towers.

"I know how to fix the wobbly parts now," he said.

That night, Tommy drew his sandy town before bed. He put the remembering shell on his shelf, right where he could see it.

The next beach day, he would bring his bucket, his shovel, and plenty of patience.
