## Story

## A Too-Small Home

Mama Crab, Papa Crab, and their young crabs lived under a smooth brown shell near the tide pools.

It had been a cozy home for a long time. But the young crabs were growing.

At bedtime, one crab's leg poked out the door. Another crab bumped the wall. Papa Crab could not turn around without tapping Mama Crab's claw.

"We need more room," Mama Crab said.

"A shell with a wider doorway," Papa Crab added.

The young crabs clicked with excitement. Moving sounded like an adventure.

They packed seaweed snacks, filled a tiny shell with fresh water, and set off along the shore.

## Looking Carefully

The first shell they found was pretty but cracked.

"Rain would drip in," said Mama Crab.

The second shell was enormous.

Papa Crab pushed it with both claws. It did not move.

"Too heavy," he puffed.

The third shell had a doorway so narrow that the youngest crab paused halfway in and halfway out.

"Not this one," said the youngest crab.

They kept searching.

Near a bright tide pool, something shiny peeked from the sand.

It was a conch shell with silver stripes.

## The Voice in the Conch

The conch shell trembled.

"Excuse me," said a small voice from inside. "Could someone help?"

The crab family froze.

A mermaid's face appeared in the shining curve of the shell.

"My pearl necklace broke," she said. "The pearls rolled into the tide pool. I can see them, but I cannot reach the ones under the rocks."

Mama Crab looked at the family.

"We are good at reaching under rocks," she said.

"And we are looking carefully already," said Papa Crab.

The young crabs clicked in agreement.

## Pearl Search

The tide pool was clear and still.

The eldest young crab found a pearl beside a purple shell.

"One pearl," she called.

The middle crab found another beneath a ribbon of sea grass.

"Two pearls."

The youngest crab peered under a flat rock and saw the last pearl shining in the shade.

"I can reach it," he said.

He stretched one careful claw under the rock and rolled the pearl out.

The mermaid clapped her hands. "You found them all."

She threaded the pearls back together and tied the string tightly.

## A Thank-You Gift

"I cannot give you a home," said the mermaid, "but I can help you find one."

She touched the conch shell. It glowed softly and pointed its tip toward a quiet part of the beach.

The crab family followed.

Past the driftwood, past the striped stones, past the pool where tiny fish flashed silver, they found a shell resting beneath a ledge.

It was wide.

It was strong.

It had a smooth doorway and enough space for everyone.

The youngest crab stepped inside first.

"I can turn around," he called.

Papa Crab tried next. "So can I."

Mama Crab smiled. "This feels right."

## The New Tide Pool Home

The crab family settled into the roomier shell.

They chose sleeping corners. They made a snack spot. They placed one smooth pebble near the doorway to remember the old home.

Later, the mermaid visited the tide pool and waved from the water.

"How is the new shell?" she asked.

"Roomy," said Papa Crab.

"Dry," said Mama Crab.

"Turn-around-able," said the youngest crab.

Everyone laughed.

The crab family missed their old shell a little, but the new one had space for stretching, playing, and growing.

That evening, they watched the tide sparkle outside their doorway and felt ready for their next beach morning.
