## Story

## A Day at the Beach

It was a bright morning as the family got ready for a day at the beach. They packed sunscreen, towels, water bottles, snacks, and a striped umbrella.

As soon as they arrived, the children heard gulls calling over the water. The sand felt warm under their feet as they walked to a clear spot near the lifeguard flags.

The children saw so many things to do: building sandcastles, splashing in the shallow waves, and searching for seashells. Soon everyone was busy with a favorite beach job.

Mum helped build a tall sandcastle while Dad took turns standing at the water's edge with each child. The children giggled every time a small wave curled around their toes.

Grandma sat under the umbrella, reading her favorite book and smiling at the busy castle builders.

They played until the sandcastle had shell windows, a moat, and a seaweed flag.

## The Storm Rolls In

After lunch, the lifeguard blew a whistle and pointed to the changing sky.

"Rain is coming," Mum said. "Time for our beach plan."

The children looked at the blanket, the buckets, the castle, and the umbrella. There was a lot to carry.

"One job each," Dad said. "Slow steps. We stay together."

Grandma closed her book. The children put shells back on the sand, stacked the buckets, and folded the towels into the beach bag.

## Finding Shelter

Rain began to dot the sand.

Other families were packing too. The lifeguard guided everyone toward the covered picnic shelter near the path.

Mum held the umbrella low so the wind could pass over it. Dad carried the heavy bag. Grandma held the youngest child's hand.

The older children carried the buckets and counted each family member.

"One, two, three, four, five," they called. "All together."

They reached the shelter just as the rain grew heavier. The family shook water from their hats and laughed at their sandy feet.

## Cozy Movie Time Indoors

When the rain softened, the family went home for warm cocoa and dry socks.

Under blankets, the children talked about their beach plan.

"I carried the buckets," said one child.

"I counted everyone," said another.

Mum wrote a new list for the next beach trip: check the weather, stay near the flags, pack together, and listen when helpers give advice.

The children missed their sandcastle, but they felt proud of the way they had worked together.

"Next time," Dad said, "we can build another one."

"With an even stronger moat," said Grandma.
