Warm light glowed in its round windows. "I have never seen that before," Lila said. Grandmother looked at the cottage and smiled as if she knew an old secret. "We may knock, but we do not wander into dunes without a grown-up." They followed the marked path. An old man with kind eyes opened the door. "Good evening," he said. Some shimmered blue with ocean dreams. Some twinkled silver with flying dreams. "I carry these to sleeping children," said the Sandman. "But the sea wind shook my shelves, and five jars rolled out through the dune grass." Lila saw five empty spaces on the shelf. "Can we help look?" she asked. "With your grandmother beside you," said the Sandman. The Sandman carried a padded basket. Lila carried the lantern carefully in both hands. The first glow appeared beside a tuft of dune grass. Lila knelt and found a gold jar humming softly. "Birthday cake dream," said the Sandman. "Still safe." "We found it rolling," one fairy said. "We were keeping it from the crabs." "Thank you," said the Sandman. "It belongs on my shelf before bedtime." The fairies helped search after that. They flew low over the sand and rang tiny bells whenever they saw a glow. Nobody needed traps. Asking worked better. Together they found a silver flying dream, a green garden dream, and a purple dream full of friendly bedtime stories. ## Finding All the Missing Dream Jars The last jar rested beside Lila's sandcastle. The lantern glowed bright pink, and Lila laughed. "It was near me the whole time." The Sandman placed the fifth jar in the padded basket. Back at the cottage, Lila helped match each jar to its empty space. "Gold, blue, silver, green, purple," she counted. The shelf gave a soft chime. "Just in time," said the Sandman. He gave Lila a tiny empty jar with a cork stopper. The fairies flew beside him like sparks. "Will we see him again?" Lila asked. "Perhaps," said Grandmother. "But tonight, I think he has work to do." At home, Lila placed one good thought in her tiny jar: the sound of dream shelves chiming in a cottage by the dunes. Then she drifted to sleep before the moon rose over the roof.
