It had no painted ponies. Instead, six carved seahorses circled a silver pole. Mia stepped closer. "Did that one move?" "I did," said the seahorse. "My name is Ripple. Would you like a ride?" Max looked at Mia. Mia looked at Max. "A short ride," Mia said. "And together," Max added. They settled onto Ripple's saddle. The carousel music began softly, like bells under water. Round and round they spun. The dunes blurred. The sky turned blue-green. Bubbles floated past Max's nose. Then the carousel slowed beside the entrance to an underwater cave. Max saw a turtle resting beside a fan of sea grass. "Everything is alive down here," Mia whispered. "That is why we move carefully," Ripple said. A dolphin clicked a greeting and swam beside them. "Where are you going?" asked the dolphin. "To Shell Lantern Island," Ripple said. "The cave current has been twisting the wrong way." The dolphin flicked her tail. "We can guide you past the reef." Soon a turtle joined them too, then a school of tiny silver fish. Max held tightly to Ripple's mane. The shark did not snap. It did not chase. It circled once, watching the group with steady eyes. "He is guarding the narrow pass," said the turtle. "The current pushed rocks loose this morning." Ripple bowed his head. "Thank you for warning us." The shark turned and showed them a safer opening between two rocks. "Slowly," Mia whispered. Ripple swam through the opening. The dolphin guided the left side. The turtle watched the right. When they were through, Max let out a long breath. "I thought he was trying to scare us," he said. "We should not race this," he said. The silver fish swam ahead, showing where the current moved fastest. The dolphin pushed a floating branch away. The turtle pointed toward a still pocket near the wall. "There," said Mia. "That water is calmer." Ripple followed her point. They moved from one calm pocket to the next until the spinning water opened into a bright lagoon. A waterfall poured silver water into the lagoon. Little crabs tapped patterns on smooth stones. "It is beautiful," Mia said. Ripple nudged a fallen lantern with his nose. "The twisting current knocked these down," he said. "Can you help place them back on the branches?" Max picked up a pink shell lantern. Mia picked up a yellow one. The dolphin lifted high branches with her nose, and the turtle steadied the low ones. Soon every lantern glowed again. The island shimmered with soft colors. Round and round the carousel spun. When it stopped, they were behind the beach grass again. The sun was low over the water. Mia crouched beside a tide pool and watched a tiny crab step around a pebble. "Careful paths matter," she said. Max picked up a bit of litter near the dunes and put it in the bin. "So do clean beaches," he said. Behind them, the carousel gave one soft note of music. Ripple winked before becoming still again.
