They walked over flat rocks, counted tiny crabs in tide pools, and followed a line of smooth shells around a bend in the shore. Behind the rocks was a small cove they had never seen before. Lily crouched at the edge. "Did you see that?" A face popped up from the water. The girl in the cove had bright eyes, long golden hair, and a tail that shimmered green and blue. Max gasped. "A mermaid!" The mermaid smiled. "My name is Marina. Please do not shout. This cove is small, and echoes travel." Lily lowered her voice. "I am Lily. This is Max." "We did not mean to disturb you," Max said. "You did not," Marina said. Marina glided beside them and pointed out tiny fish, waving sea grass, and a crab carrying a shell much too big for its body. "Your home is beautiful," Lily said. "Thank you," Marina said. "That is why I keep it quiet. Too many visitors would scare the fish and break the coral." Max nodded. "We can be careful." "And we can tell Mum we found a tide pool to watch," Lily said. "We do not have to tell everyone exactly where it is." Marina looked relieved. "My pearl necklace broke." Only the silver string remained around her neck. The pearls were gone. "When did you last have them?" Lily asked. "This morning," Marina said. "I was swimming near the sea grass, then past the cave, then around the old anchor." Max picked up his small beach bucket. "We can help search." "We need a plan," Lily said. "One place at a time." Marina smiled. "Found one!" she called softly. At the cave, Max saw another pearl shining between two stones. He used the handle of his net to roll it closer before picking it up. "Two," he said. Near the old anchor, Marina found three pearls tucked in the sand. "They must have rolled down the slope," she said. They placed each pearl into Max's bucket. "The current is moving toward the rocks," she said. "Stay in the shallow part." Max and Lily waited where they could stand. Marina swam around the rocks, then waved. "I see it, but it is under a shell." A little crab sat proudly on top of the shell. Lily held out a piece of seaweed. "Would you like this instead?" The crab took the seaweed and shuffled away. Marina lifted the shell and found the last pearl underneath. "All of them!" Max said. Marina threaded the pearls back onto the silver string. "We will keep it peaceful," Max promised. "And we will only come when Mum is nearby and the tide is safe," Lily added. Marina touched the water with her tail, sending silver ripples across the cove. "Then you are welcome here," she said. Max and Lily followed the shell path back around the rocks. Mum waved from the beach blanket. "There you are," she said. "Did you find anything interesting?" Lily looked at Max. Max looked at Lily. "A very quiet tide pool," Lily said. "And a shell to remember it," Max added. They smiled because some places are special enough to treat gently.
