# Beach Buddies Build

_A Story About Listening and Sharing Jobs_

## Story

## Three Beach Buddies

Carl the crab, Sammy the seagull, and Stella the starfish met beside a smooth patch of sand every sunny morning.

"Let us build a castle today," Carl said, clicking his claws.

"A big one," called Sammy from above.

"A pretty one," said Stella, resting near a line of empty shells.

They all began at once. Carl dug fast. Sand flew everywhere. Sammy flapped down with a splash of water and nearly tipped the bucket. Stella tried to hold a tower steady, but the tower was too tall and slipped sideways.

"Stop!" Stella said.

Everyone froze.

"Maybe we need a plan before more sand lands on my head."

Carl looked at the messy pile. "Good idea."

## Choosing Jobs

The friends sat in a circle and talked about what each one could do carefully.

"I can dig a shallow moat," Carl said. "No big holes."

"I can bring small splashes of water," said Sammy. "I will land over there, where the bucket is flat."

"I can sort empty shells for the gate," said Stella. "Please place them near me, not on top of me."

"Deal," said Carl.

"Deal," said Sammy.

They started again. Carl scraped a neat moat around the castle spot. Sammy carried water in a shell and poured it slowly. Stella chose smooth white shells for one side and striped shells for the other.

This time, nobody rushed.

## The Wobbly Wall

The first wall still wobbled. Carl frowned at it.

"I packed the sand hard," he said.

Stella touched the bottom with one arm. "The base is narrow."

Sammy hopped closer, folding his wings tight. "What if we make the wall shorter and wider?"

Carl scraped more sand to the bottom. Stella pressed shells along the edge like tiny stones. Sammy added just enough water to help the sand stick.

The wall stood.

"Shorter works," Carl said.

"Wider helps," said Stella.

Sammy puffed his feathers. "And slow pouring helps too."

## The Shell Gate

By lunchtime, the castle had a low wall, a small moat, and a shell gate. It was not the biggest castle on the beach, but it was tidy and strong.

A little crab stopped to look. "Who built this?"

"All of us," Carl said.

"Carl made the moat," said Sammy.

"Sammy brought the water," said Stella.

"And Stella made the gate beautiful," Carl added.

The three friends rested beside their castle while the sun warmed the sand. A breeze moved across the beach, and the shell gate glittered softly.

"Same time tomorrow?" Sammy asked.

"Yes," said Stella.

Carl lifted one claw. "Tomorrow we build a bridge."
