## Story

## Camp Arrival

Beach camp began with sunscreen, name tags, and the sound of gulls over the dunes. Timmy, Sarah, and Alex met beside a basket of soft foam balls.

Alex bounced on his toes. "I hope we play relay games."

"I like drawing maps," Sarah said quietly.

Timmy looked at the wide sandy field. "I like games too, but I get tired if we run for too long."

Their counselor, Mara, heard him and nodded. "Good to know. Champions tell the team what they need."

That made Timmy stand a little taller.

## The First Game

The first challenge was beach ball relay. Each team had to carry a ball around cones, pass it to the next player, and finish at the flag.

Alex ran fast, but he forgot to wait for the pass. Sarah remembered the path, but she did not want everyone shouting at once. Timmy made careful throws, but the long run was hard.

Their team stopped after the first round.

"We are rushing," Sarah said.

"I can run the longest part," Alex offered.

"I can stand by the cones and call the next turn," said Sarah.

Timmy held up the ball. "I can do the careful pass at the end."

Mara smiled. "That sounds like a team plan."

## Better Rules

For the next round, the team changed the job list. Alex ran the beach loop. Sarah watched the cones and called, "Left, then straight." Timmy waited near the flag and made the final pass.

The ball moved smoothly.

"Ready, Timmy?" Alex called.

"Ready," Timmy said.

The ball landed in his hands. He passed it to the basket, and everyone cheered.

They did not win the round, but they finished with all three campers smiling.

"That felt better," Timmy said.

"Because nobody had to pretend," Sarah said.

## The Treasure Map

The final beach challenge was a treasure map trail. Teams had to find five picture clues: a shell, a flag, a driftwood log, a blue bucket, and a rope circle.

Sarah studied the map. "The shell clue is near the shade tent."

Alex raced ahead, then stopped and looked back. "Too fast?"

"A little," Timmy said.

Alex jogged back. "Then we move together."

Sarah led them to the shell. Timmy spotted the blue bucket under a bench. Alex found the rope circle half-buried in sand and brushed it clear with his shoe.

At the last clue, another team arrived at the same time.

"Can both teams finish?" Sarah asked Mara.

"Yes," Mara said. "The goal is to solve the trail."

Both teams placed their final cards on the table.

## Camp Champions

At sunset, Mara gave each camper a paper medal with a different word on it. Timmy's said `Careful Passer`. Sarah's said `Map Reader`. Alex's said `Steady Runner`.

"Do champions always win first place?" Timmy asked.

Mara shook her head. "Champions help the game work for everyone."

Sarah pinned her medal to her shirt. "Then we were champions today."

Alex grinned. "Tomorrow I want to try map reading."

"And I might try the short run," said Timmy.

The three friends walked to dinner together, sandy, tired, and already planning the next camp game.
