## Story

## After the Storm

Carl the crab lived with his friends beside a warm, shallow tide pool. They knew every pebble, every shell, and every shady crack in the rocks.

One night, rain tapped the beach and waves rolled higher than usual. By morning, the tide pool looked different. Sand covered one hiding place. A branch lay across another. The water was cloudy.

Tiny Crab peeked from behind Carl. "Is our home gone?"

"It changed," Carl said. "Let us look carefully before we decide."

The crabs waited until the water was calm. Then they checked their pool one slow step at a time.

## Carl's Map

Carl scratched a simple map in the damp sand. He drew their old pool, the big flat rock, and the line where the waves still reached.

"We need shade," said Tiny Crab.

"And small cracks to hide in," said Pebble Crab.

"And water that stays when the tide goes out," Carl added.

They agreed to search together. No one would scuttle far ahead. If a wave came close, they would stop behind the rocks and wait.

"A careful quest," said Tiny Crab.

"The best kind," Carl replied.

## Across the Rocks

The crabs moved along the shore while the sun rose higher. Carl led them around a slippery seaweed patch instead of across it.

"That way looks shorter," said Pebble Crab.

"Shorter is not always steadier," Carl said.

They crossed flat stones, rested in cool shade, and watched the water before each step. A gull circled overhead, so the crabs tucked under a ledge until it flew away.

Tiny Crab trembled. "I do not like moving."

Carl touched claws with him. "Me neither. We can be nervous and still go slowly."

The group waited until Tiny Crab was ready, then continued.

## The Quiet Pool

Near the end of the beach, the crabs found a tide pool tucked between two smooth rocks. Clear water filled the middle. Sea grass waved gently at the edge. Small cracks lined the stone wall.

"Shade," said Tiny Crab.

"Shelter," said Pebble Crab.

Carl checked the wave line. The water reached the pool, but it did not crash over it.

"This could work," he said.

The crabs explored each corner. They found a smooth shell for Tiny Crab, a narrow crevice for Pebble Crab, and a sandy patch where everyone could gather.

## A New Start

That evening, the crabs watched the sunset from their new pool. Their old home was still part of their story, but the new one already felt less strange.

"Will the beach change again?" Tiny Crab asked.

"Yes," Carl said. "Beaches do that."

Pebble Crab looked around the pool. "Then we will keep watching."

"And keep our map fresh," said Carl.

The crabs settled into the quiet water. Above them, the first star appeared. Around them, the new tide pool held steady.
