## Story

## Beach Cleanup Day

Emma zipped her cleanup vest and pulled on thick gloves. Her friends Maxi, Ben, and Mia stood beside her with buckets labeled `recycle`, `trash`, and `ask an adult`.

Their teacher, Mr. Ruiz, pointed to the shore. "Pick up only what is safe. If you see glass, metal, or anything sharp, call me."

"What about shells?" Mia asked.

"Leave natural things where they are," Mr. Ruiz said. "Empty shells can still be homes for tiny animals later."

Emma liked that rule. The beach was not just a place to visit. It was a home.

## Interesting Finds

The cleanup began slowly. Maxi found a plastic bottle with a label written in another language. Ben found a snack wrapper with a picture of a mountain on it. Emma found a postcard sealed inside a clear plastic sleeve.

"Is this treasure?" Ben asked.

"This postcard belongs to someone," Emma said.

Mr. Ruiz read the address. "We can take this to the visitor center. They may be able to return it."

Mia held up the bottle. "How did this get here?"

"Wind, rivers, ships, busy beaches," Mr. Ruiz said. "The ocean connects many places."

The children looked at their buckets. Each bit of litter felt like a message: take better care.

## The Sorting Station

At the shade tent, the class sorted everything they had found. Clean plastic bottles went into recycling. Dirty wrappers went into trash. Sharp metal stayed in the adult bucket.

Emma placed the postcard in a small tray.

"It came from far away," she said.

"And ended up on our beach," Maxi added.

Mr. Ruiz spread a map on the table. The class marked places from the labels they could read. Some were nearby. Some were across the sea.

"The world feels big," Mia said.

"And connected," said Emma.

## A Better Treasure

When the cleanup ended, the beach looked calmer. There were no wrappers near the tide line and no bottle caps by the dunes.

Emma watched a hermit crab walk past an empty shell. She was glad they had kept the shells in place.

"My favorite find was the postcard," Ben said.

"Mine was the map," said Mia.

Emma tied the last trash bag closed. "Mine is this part."

"What part?" Maxi asked.

Emma pointed to the clean stretch of sand.

"The beach after everybody helped."

Mr. Ruiz carried the postcard to the visitor center. The children carried their empty buckets back to school, already planning signs for the next cleanup day.
