# Sand Castle Volleyball

_How Friends Made a Better Beach Court_

A group of kids want to play volleyball at the beach, but the sand is bumpy and the ball keeps bouncing away. With an adult's help, they choose a safe spot, smooth their play area, and make low sand lines for a friendly game.

## Story

## The Bouncy Court

Nina, Omar, Grace, and Theo carried a soft volleyball to the beach. They set their towels near Nina's aunt, who was reading under an umbrella.

"Can we play over there?" Omar asked.

Aunt Mira looked at the sand. "Let us check it first."

The children walked across the spot. One side had large footprints. The other side had little hills where someone had built drip castles.

Theo tossed the ball gently. It bounced off a bump and rolled toward a sand pail.

"This court is wiggly," Grace said.

Nina picked up the ball. "We need a flatter place."

## Smooth Enough

Aunt Mira helped them choose a clear patch away from umbrellas, towels, and the waterline.

"Only smooth the place where you will play," she said. "Leave the rest of the beach as it is."

The children used their hands and small shovels to fill the largest footprints. They pressed the sand flat with the bottoms of their buckets.

Omar found a sharp shell and held it up.

"Good catch," Aunt Mira said. "Put sharp things in this cup so no one steps on them."

Soon the court was not perfect, but it was smooth enough for bare feet and gentle bounces.

Grace bounced the ball once. It came back to her hands.

"Better," she said.

## Low Sand Lines

The children still needed boundaries. Theo dragged his heel to draw a line, but the mark disappeared when the wind brushed over it.

"What if we make tiny sand walls?" Nina asked.

"Tiny," Aunt Mira said. "Low enough to step over."

They shaped four low lines around the court. The walls were not for stopping every ball. They were just easy-to-see edges.

Omar placed two sandals at the middle for a pretend net.

"Ready?" he asked.

"Soft hits only," Grace said.

They agreed, then started the game.

## The First Rally

Nina served with two hands. Omar bumped the ball up. Grace tapped it across the sandal net. Theo missed, laughed, and chased it before it reached another family's towel.

"Out by one sand wall," Theo called.

"Good call," said Omar.

They played until their cheeks were warm and their water bottles were almost empty. Sometimes the ball bounced sideways. Sometimes a sand line broke and someone repaired it with one quick pat.

When Aunt Mira said it was time for shade, the children knocked down the low walls and smoothed the sand again.

"The next players can choose their own court," Nina said.

They carried the ball back to the umbrella, tired, sandy, and ready for watermelon.
