## Story

## A Day at the Beach

Lily and Max carried two buckets, one shovel, and a bag of snacks to the sand. Their parents set up nearby where they could watch the water.

"Castle first," Lily said.

"Moat first," said Max.

They chose a spot far enough from the waves and began to dig. Lily packed wet sand into a tower. Max made a winding road to the gate.

Near the rocks, a boy watched them for a moment, then looked down at his own empty bucket.

"Maybe he wants to build," Max said.

"We can ask," Lily replied.

## Inviting Alex

Lily and Max walked over with their shovel.

"Hi," Lily said. "We are making a castle. Would you like to build with us?"

The boy looked at the shovel. "Maybe. I am Alex."

"You can choose a job," Max said. "Tower, road, shell gate, or moat."

Alex smiled a little. "Shell gate."

They checked with their parents, then carried Alex's bucket to the castle spot.

## Three Builders

Alex found empty shells and smooth stones. Lily showed him where the gate could go, but Alex had another idea.

"What if the gate is wide enough for two roads?" he asked.

Max looked at his winding road. "Then I can make a second road."

Lily patted the wall lower so the gate would stay steady.

The first gate crumbled. Everyone paused.

"Too tall," Alex said.

"Wider bottom," Lily said.

"Two roads," Max said.

They tried again. This time the gate held.

## Saying Goodbye

By late afternoon, the castle had three towers, two roads, and one wide shell gate. It was not the biggest castle on the beach, but it looked busy and welcoming.

Alex's grandmother called from her umbrella. "Time to rinse your feet."

"Bye," Alex said. "Thanks for asking me."

"Thanks for the gate idea," said Lily.

Max waved his sandy shovel. "See you next beach day."

Their parents smiled at one another as the children packed up. The tide was still far away, and the little castle stood quietly with its wide gate open.
