## Story

## Sandy Feels Slow

Sandy was a small sea star who lived in a clear tide pool. He liked the cool rock under his arms and the way sunlight made wavy patterns on the sand.

The fish in the pool zipped past him.

"Race you to the shell!" one fish called.

Sandy tried to move faster, but sea stars do not zip. He moved slowly, with tiny tube feet working one after another.

By the time he reached the shell, the fish were already playing a new game.

Sandy sighed. "I am always last."

## Tilly Listens

Tilly the turtle rested near the edge of the pool when the tide was high enough for a visit.

"Why are you hiding under that rock?" Tilly asked.

"I am too slow for the games," Sandy said. "Everyone else is quick."

Tilly looked at the fish darting in circles. Then she looked at Sandy's five steady arms.

"Quick is useful," Tilly said. "Steady is useful too."

Sandy was not sure he believed her.

## The Missing Shell Line

That afternoon, the tide pool friends built a shell line from one rock to another. The fish carried tiny shells in their mouths. A crab nudged bigger shells into place.

Then a little wave slipped into the pool and scattered the middle of the line.

"I cannot remember the pattern," said the crab.

Sandy looked closely. He had moved slowly beside the whole line, so he had noticed each shell.

"White shell, striped shell, pink shell," Sandy said. "Then two small gray ones."

The fish stopped swimming. "You remember all that?"

Sandy nodded. "I had time to look."

## Sandy's Kind of Help

Sandy settled beside the broken line and pointed with one arm. The crab placed the larger shells. The fish brought the tiny gray ones. Tilly watched from the water and smiled.

When the line was fixed, it looked even neater than before.

"You saw things we missed," said the fish.

Sandy felt warm inside. He still moved slowly. That had not changed.

But slow meant careful. Slow meant noticing. Slow meant he could help in his own way.

The next time the fish called, "Race you to the shell," Sandy smiled.

"I will be the pattern keeper," he said.

And everyone agreed that the game needed one.
