## Story

## Ollie Follows the River

Ollie the otter loved the river behind his willow tree. He knew the smooth stones, the wide bend, and the log where dragonflies rested.

One morning, the river smelled a little salty.

"The sea must be close," Ollie said.

He floated downstream on his back, keeping near the bank where the current was gentle. Soon the river widened into an estuary, a place where river water and ocean water mixed.

"New water," Ollie whispered.

## The Eelgrass Meadow

A seahorse named Pip bobbed beside a waving patch of eelgrass.

"Please swim around the meadow," Pip said. "Tiny fish hide here."

Ollie tucked his paws close and glided around the green blades.

Small fish shimmered inside the grass. A crab cleaned bits of old leaves from the sand. Snails moved slowly along the stems.

"Everyone has a job," Ollie said.

"Everyone has a place," Pip replied.

## Rocks That Tell Stories

Farther along, Ollie found striped rocks near the shore. Some were smooth. Some were rough. Some had little shell marks inside.

An old turtle rested nearby. "Those rocks have been shaped by water for a long time."

Ollie touched one gently with his paw. "Longer than a summer?"

"Much longer," said the turtle.

Ollie imagined waves, rain, and river currents smoothing the stone day after day. The beach felt older than it looked.

## The Floating Wrapper

A silver wrapper drifted past the eelgrass. Ollie reached for it, then stopped.

"It might tear," Pip said. "Push it toward the cleanup net."

Ollie used a stick to guide the wrapper away from the grass. Pip and two fish made tiny waves to nudge it along. The wrapper floated into a net tied beside the dock for litter.

"That does not belong in the water," Ollie said.

"No," said Pip. "But careful helpers can move it."

## Back to the Willow

By afternoon, Ollie was ready to swim home. He had seen fish nurseries, old rocks, busy crabs, and one piece of litter that was no longer floating loose.

"Will you come back?" Pip asked.

"Yes," said Ollie. "Next time I will bring my cousin, and we will swim around the eelgrass."

He followed the river upstream, carrying the salty smell of the estuary in his whiskers and a new respect for the place where river and sea meet.
