## Story

## A Day at the Beach

Lily, Ben, Maya, and Theo spread their towels under a blue umbrella. The beach was bright and busy, with waves curling onto the sand and gulls calling above the snack stand.

"Stay between the flags," Lily's dad reminded them. "And come back if anything feels wrong."

The friends built a castle with a moat, decorated it with shells, and ran to the shallow water when their feet grew hot.

## The Sting

Lily was jumping over a small wave when she stopped with a small gasp.

"Ow!" she cried. "My ankle hurts."

Ben saw a red line on Lily's skin. Maya noticed something clear and wobbly floating nearby.

"Do not rub it," Maya said. "Let us get your dad."

Theo waved both arms toward the umbrella. Lily's dad hurried over and helped Lily walk out of the water.

## Getting the Right Help

The lifeguard came with a first-aid bag.

"You did the right thing by asking for help," the lifeguard said. "We will rinse with seawater and check for any bits left on the skin. No rubbing."

Lily squeezed her towel while the lifeguard worked. Her friends sat beside her, close enough to keep her company but not in the way.

"Tell me about the castle," Lily said, trying not to cry.

"The moat survived two waves," Ben said. "A very brave moat."

Lily laughed a little.

## Waiting Together

The lifeguard told Lily's dad what to watch for and when to get more medical help. Lily rested in the shade with a cool drink.

Her ankle still stung, but it felt easier now that an adult knew what to do.

Maya drew a tiny flag for the sandcastle that said Lily's Lookout. Theo brought Lily's sun hat. Ben saved her the smoothest shell they had found.

"I was nervous," Lily admitted.

"Me too," said Theo. "But we knew where to go."

## Back to the Sand

Lily did not go back into the water that afternoon. She helped decorate the castle from her towel instead.

Before they left, the friends made a beach plan for next time: swim near lifeguards, tell an adult quickly, and never try mystery remedies from guesses.

Lily tucked the smooth shell into her pocket. The day had not gone perfectly, but her friends had stayed calm, listened, and helped her feel safe.
