## Story

## The Beach Day

Lily carried her red and yellow kite across the sand. Dad carried the spool of string and checked the beach around them.

"We need open space," Dad said. "No umbrellas, no people, no birds nearby."

Lily pointed to a clear patch. "There?"

"Good choice."

She held up the kite and ran. The kite hopped, twisted, and landed nose-first in the sand.

"Oh," Lily said. "That was not flying."

## The Tangle

When Lily picked up the kite, the string had wrapped around one stick and two tails.

"It is ruined," she said.

Dad sat beside her. "It is tangled. That is different."

He showed Lily the first knot. She loosened it with her fingers. Dad held the kite still while Lily unwound the tail.

"One knot gone," Dad said.

Lily found another. "This one is smaller."

"Then we go slower."

## Waiting for Wind

The kite was ready again, but the wind faded. Lily lifted it and waited.

"Now?" she asked.

Dad held up a ribbon tied to the kite handle. It drooped.

"Not yet."

They watched the waves. They watched the ribbon. At last, it fluttered toward the dunes.

"Now," Dad said.

Lily ran a few steps and let the string slide out.

## Up It Goes

The kite wobbled, dipped, then caught the steady breeze. It rose above the beach, bright against the blue sky.

Lily laughed. "It needed the right wind."

"And untangled string," Dad said.

"And a little waiting," Lily added.

She held the handle with both hands while the kite danced gently overhead. When the wind grew too strong, Dad helped her reel it in.

The kite landed softly on the sand, ready for another try another day.
