## Story

## The First Tower

Maya, Leo, Priya, and Ben carried buckets and shovels down to the quiet part of the beach. The sand was damp near the water, but their grown-up pointed to a safer spot farther back.

"This sand will stay better," Priya said, pressing her hands into it.

Ben filled a blue bucket. Leo patted the sides flat. Maya drew a square in the sand with her shovel.

"A castle needs a gate," Maya said.

"And a road," said Leo.

"And flags made of shells," Ben added.

Soon one tall tower stood in the middle. It leaned a little, but the friends liked it anyway.

## The Windy Surprise

A quick beach wind rushed over their towels. It blew loose sand across the castle and knocked the top from the tall tower.

Ben stared at the broken tower. "We worked so hard."

Maya took a slow breath. "Maybe it was too tall."

Priya tapped the base with her shovel. "The bottom needs to be wider."

Leo nodded. "Let us build it lower, like a real fort."

No one laughed at the toppled tower. They brushed the loose sand aside and made a new plan in the smooth patch that remained.

## A Stronger Shape

This time the friends packed wet sand into short, wide walls. Ben carried small buckets of water. Priya mixed the sand until it held together. Maya shaped the corners. Leo smoothed the road to the gate.

A little girl nearby watched with a shell in her hand.

"Can I help?" she asked.

"Yes," said Maya. "We need careful decorations."

The girl placed her shell by the gate. Her brother added tiny stones along the road. Two more children made small towers outside the wall.

"Not too high," Leo reminded them.

"Wide at the bottom," Priya added.

The castle grew slowly, and this time it stood firm.

## The Finished Fort

By late afternoon, the sandcastle had a low wall, a wide gate, shell flags, and a tidy road leading to the sea. The tower tops were not the tallest on the beach, but they did not wobble.

Ben placed the last shell on the gate. "Finished."

"For now," said Priya, smiling.

The children sat back on their towels while the waves rolled far away from their fort. A breeze passed over the beach again, but the castle stayed in place.

Maya looked at her friends. "I like this one better."

Leo grinned. "Me too. It has room for everybody's ideas."

They watched the late sun stretch beside the walls until it was time to brush sand from their feet and head home.
