## Story

Oliver Owl lived in a cottage with a red roof and flower boxes that bloomed with purple lavender. Each evening, he whispered goodnight to the crickets and moths. But Oliver wished someone would whisper goodnight back. His wings felt heavy, like they were made of stone instead of feathers.

One twilight evening, something glimmered beneath the rosemary bush. Oliver's heart fluttered. He bent low and found a silver thimble no bigger than an acorn. Tiny flowers danced around its edge.

"Oh my," he whispered. "A treasure that belongs to someone."

Morning came wrapped in mist. Oliver flew to the meadow where Ruby Rabbit gathered breakfast clover. His voice came out barely louder than a whisper.

"Excuse me. I found something."

Ruby's ears shot straight up. Her eyes went wide and bright as two full moons.

"A thimble! That is mine. I have been searching everywhere."

But Oliver noticed letters carved inside: S.M. His stomach twisted like a pretzel.

"These letters do not match your name."

Ruby's ears drooped. Her pink nose stopped twitching.

"I wanted something beautiful." Her voice got small. "I am sorry."

Heat rushed through Oliver's feathers. His talons gripped the thimble tighter. Ruby had not told the truth. Without another word, Oliver spread his wings and flew home. The wind felt cold against his face.

Back at his cottage, Oliver set the thimble on his table. Candlelight made it sparkle, but the sparkle felt wrong somehow. His chest ached. Why would Ruby lie to someone who was trying to help?

Oliver tossed in his nest all night. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Ruby's drooping ears. When dawn painted the sky pink and gold, Oliver opened his door. A small basket sat on his doorstep. Inside were three strawberries and a note in wobbly letters:

*I am sorry I was not honest. - Ruby*

Oliver's tight chest began to soften, like butter in warm sunshine. He remembered how Ruby's paws had shaken. Maybe wanting something so badly had made her forget to be honest. Maybe she deserved another chance.

Oliver picked up the thimble and flew to Ruby's burrow. Ruby sat outside, trying to sew with her claws. The fabric kept slipping and bunching. She looked tired and quiet.

"Ruby?" Oliver's whisper was gentle as falling snow.

Ruby gasped.

"Oliver! I thought you would never want to see me again."

Oliver landed beside her.

"Your note was brave."

Tears wobbled in Ruby's eyes.

"I made a mistake. I wanted something pretty so much that I forgot to be honest."

Oliver felt his last bit of anger float away like a dandelion seed.

"I know who the thimble belongs to: Sally Squirrel. Would you help me return it?"

Together they walked through grass that brushed their feet like silk ribbons. At Sally's tree-house, Sally squeaked happily.

"Grandmother's thimble! I have missed it so."

Sally noticed Ruby watching her sewing basket.

"Do you sew?"

Ruby nodded, her ears lifting a tiny bit. Sally smiled and pulled out a brass thimble.

"This was my mother's. I have Grandmother's now. Would you like this one?"

Ruby's paws trembled.

"For me? Even after what I did?"

"Everyone deserves kindness," Sally replied warmly.

Now when evening comes and stars wink awake, Ruby visits Oliver's cottage. She brings berries. He makes chamomile tea. Ruby sews by the window while Oliver reads softly about faraway places. Sometimes they whisper about their day. Sometimes they sit in happy quiet. Oliver's cottage does not feel empty anymore. It feels warm and full, like a teacup filled with honey.
