## Story

## The Cave by the Wall

Prince Leo liked exploring the castle grounds before breakfast.

One morning, he followed a trail of warm smoke to a cave beside the outer wall. Inside, something enormous snored.

Leo held his lantern higher.

A dragon opened one golden eye.

"You are standing on my breakfast plate," the dragon said.

Leo jumped backward. Under his boot was a flat stone covered with crumbs.

"Sorry," Leo said. "I did not know dragons used plates."

"I am Blaze," said the dragon. "I guard the castle. I also prefer tidy crumbs."

Leo had heard guards whisper nervously about Blaze. But Blaze sounded mostly sleepy.

"Would you like another roll?" Leo asked, holding out the one in his pocket.

Blaze sniffed it. "Is it raisin?"

"Honey."

"Then yes."

## A View from Above

After that morning, Leo visited Blaze often.

Blaze showed Leo the high ridge where morning light touched the mountains first. Leo showed Blaze the kitchen garden where strawberries grew behind the parsley.

One clear day, Blaze lowered one wing like a ramp.

"Do princes fly?" he asked.

"This prince has not yet tried," Leo said.

They flew low over the meadow, high enough to see the river bend but not so high that Leo felt dizzy. Blaze moved slowly and checked on Leo every few wingbeats.

"Still brave?" Blaze asked.

"Still brave," Leo called back.

From above, the kingdom looked stitched together: fields, roads, cottages, forest, river, and castle wall.

Leo liked seeing how every part connected.

## Fallen Stones

The next week, Leo and Blaze returned from a meadow flight and found a gap in the outer wall.

Stones lay scattered across the grass.

Guards ran in circles. Servants carried buckets. The king looked worried.

"Was it an attack?" Leo asked.

Blaze lowered his nose to the broken stones.

"No scorch marks," he said. "No claw marks either."

Leo crouched beside the wall. "But there are wheel tracks."

The tracks led away from the broken wall toward the old storage tower.

"We should tell Father," Leo said.

"And then follow carefully?" Blaze asked.

Leo nodded. "Carefully."

## The Hidden Map

With the king's permission, Leo and Blaze followed the tracks.

They found a cart hidden behind the storage tower. Inside were ropes, a lantern, and a torn map of the wall.

Blaze sniffed the map.

"Ink, dust, and peppermint," he said.

"Peppermint?" Leo asked.

"Advisor Morven always smells like peppermint."

Leo's stomach tightened. Morven was one of the king's oldest advisors.

They took the map to the king. Together, they searched Morven's chamber and found the missing piece tucked inside a heavy book.

Morven had planned to blame Blaze for the broken wall so the kingdom would send the dragon away. Then no one would guard the old north gate while Morven stole from the treasury road.

## The North Gate

Morven tried to leave before sunset.

Leo and Blaze reached the north gate first.

"You cannot stop me," Morven snapped. "A prince is too small, and a dragon makes everyone nervous."

Leo stood beside Blaze.

"Blaze is careful," Leo said. "And I have help."

The guards arrived behind them. The king came too, holding the torn map.

Morven dropped his bag of stolen coins.

Blaze did not roar. He did not breathe fire. He simply placed one large claw in front of the gate.

"This path is closed," he said.

Morven was taken away to answer for what he had done.

## Repair Day

The next morning, the whole castle helped repair the wall.

Masons set new stones. Gardeners brought water. Cooks passed out rolls. Leo carried tools, and Blaze lifted the heaviest stones into place.

Some people who had kept their distance from Blaze came closer.

"Thank you for guarding us," said a little girl.

Blaze blinked. "Thank you for not standing on my breakfast plate."

The girl giggled.

By evening, the wall stood strong again.

## A Prince and His Dragon

Life at the castle became busy in the ordinary way.

Leo studied maps with the king. Blaze watched the walls. Sometimes they still flew over the river when the weather was clear.

Leo no longer thought of Blaze as the unknown dragon in the cave.

Blaze now shared breakfast with a friend.

On quiet mornings, Leo brought honey rolls to the cave by the wall. Blaze saved the flat stone plate for him.

"Where shall we explore today?" Leo asked.

Blaze stretched his wings.

"Somewhere connected to everywhere else," he said.

So they flew over the stitched-together kingdom, watching the roads, fields, cottages, forest, river, and castle they both called home.
