## Story

## Meet Sir Cedric and Thomas

Sir Cedric was one of the youngest knights in the castle guard. His armor shone, his boots were polished, and everyone expected him to walk with his chin high.

Cedric preferred to walk kindly.

He thanked the stable hands, held doors for the cooks, and never passed the kitchen without saying hello to Thomas, the quiet boy who carried baskets of rolls to the great hall.

Thomas was shy with most people, but he was not shy about pies. He knew which apples stayed sweet after baking, which berries stained your fingers purple, and which oven stone made the crispiest crust.

One afternoon, Cedric stopped beside the kitchen garden.

"Is that a map?" he asked.

Thomas quickly covered the paper. "Only a sketch. I like drawing paths."

"Then you may be the most useful person in the castle," Cedric said. "Knights are always getting turned around."

Thomas laughed before he could stop himself, and that was the beginning of their friendship.

## Into the Enchanted Forest

On a clear morning, Cedric invited Thomas to walk beyond the orchard, where the trees grew silver leaves and the birds sang in three-part harmony.

"The enchanted forest?" Thomas asked. "Servants do not usually go there."

"Mapmakers do," Cedric said, offering him a spare pencil.

Thomas tucked the pencil behind his ear. They followed a mossy path past bluebells, mushroom rings, and a stream that flowed uphill for three curious minutes before remembering itself and flowing down again.

Thomas drew every turn. Cedric admired every drawing.

Neither of them noticed the silver leaves closing behind them.

## Off the Path at Dusk

By late afternoon, the path had vanished. The trees leaned close, and the forest song changed from cheerful to whispery.

Cedric rested one hand on his sword. "I think we should return."

Thomas looked at his map. The lines were good, but the forest had shifted around them. A stream now crossed a place where Thomas had drawn dry ground.

"I am sorry," Thomas said. "My map is wrong."

"No," Cedric said. "The forest is moving. That is rude of it."

Thomas almost smiled. Then a howl rolled between the trees.

Cedric stepped forward, but Thomas caught his sleeve. "Wait. Listen."

Two wolves appeared on the path, lean and bright-eyed. Cedric drew his sword slowly. Thomas noticed burrs tangled in one wolf's paw and a thorny branch dragging behind the other.

"They are not hunting," Thomas whispered. "They are hurt."

## A Different Kind of Bravery

Cedric kept his sword low while Thomas opened the cloth around their lunch.

"Good wolves," Thomas murmured, tossing a roll near the path.

The wolves sniffed. Cedric stood still as a statue. Thomas moved slowly, speaking in the same gentle voice he used for nervous kitchen cats.

One wolf limped close enough for Thomas to pull the thorny branch free. Cedric used the tip of his sword to cut the burrs from the other wolf's paw without touching its skin.

When the wolves were free, they did not attack. They turned and padded away, then looked back.

"I think they want us to follow," Thomas said.

The wolves led them to a moonlit clearing where an old stone marker pointed toward the castle road.

## The Bear at the Bridge

The castle road crossed a narrow wooden bridge, but a huge bear blocked the way. It stood on its hind legs and roared so loudly that leaves shook loose from the branches.

Cedric lifted his shield. Thomas looked past the bear and saw two cubs huddled near the bridge rail.

"She is protecting them," Thomas said. "Not fighting us."

"What do we do?" Cedric asked.

Thomas pointed to the stream below. "The cubs are blocked on this side. If we back away, she can lead them off the bridge."

Cedric nodded. He kept himself between Thomas and the bear, but he did not charge. Step by step, the friends moved backward.

The bear dropped to all fours, gathered her cubs, and lumbered into the ferns.

Thomas let out a shaky breath. "That was amazing."

"Yes," Cedric said. "You saw what I missed."

## Friendship Grows Stronger

When Cedric and Thomas reached the castle, they were muddy, hungry, and carrying a map with three new paths on it.

The other knights wanted to hear how Cedric had saved the day. Cedric shook his head.

"Thomas saved us by paying attention," he said. "I had a sword. He had sense."

Thomas blushed all the way to his ears, but he stood a little taller.

After that, Cedric asked Thomas to join patrols along the orchard road. Thomas still worked in the kitchens, and Cedric still trained with the guard, but twice a week they walked together with a notebook, a pencil, and a packet of rolls.

The castle guards began asking Thomas about paths. The cooks discovered Cedric could peel apples badly, but with great enthusiasm.

## The Best Kind of Map

Thomas finished a new map of the enchanted forest and pinned it in the guard room.

It showed safe paths, moving streams, wolf dens to avoid disturbing, and a warning beside the bridge: Give bear families plenty of room.

At the bottom, Thomas wrote two names.

Mapped by Thomas of the Castle Kitchens and Sir Cedric of the Castle Guard.

Cedric read the words and smiled. "Equal size letters."

"Of course," Thomas said.

Their friendship did not make everyone in the castle perfect overnight. But it did make people look twice at the quiet boy with the pencil and the knight who carried rolls in his saddlebag.

And whenever Cedric prepared for an outing, he always checked his sword, his shield, and most importantly, whether Thomas had brought the map.
