## Story

## The Prince and His Friends

Prince Nico lived in a busy castle full of people with different jobs, families, languages, and traditions. He liked that about it. The castle never felt boring.

Nico played chase with stable children, chess with visiting cousins, and ball games with children from the town. Some of his friends wore silk jackets. Some wore patched sleeves. Some were loud. Some needed time before joining in.

One afternoon, Nico noticed that everyone had sorted into separate groups. The stable children played by the gate. The castle children stayed near the fountain. The town children watched from the steps.

"Do you want to join the game?" Nico asked a girl named Charlotte.

She shrugged. "They already have teams."

Near the fountain, a boy named George said, "They do not play our way."

Nico looked from one group to another. Everyone wanted to play, but no one wanted to be first to cross the courtyard.

That gave him an idea.

## Getting to Know Each Other

Nico did not announce a grand plan right away. He started by listening.

Charlotte helped in the kitchen and knew how to fold pastry into tiny birds. George cared for the horses and could tell which one was walking by only from the sound of its hooves. Amira from the town could spin a wooden top longer than anyone. Ben, one of Nico's cousins, knew every rule to every card game, but he was nervous around new children.

Nico wrote their skills in a notebook.

"Why are you writing all that?" Charlotte asked.

"Because people are easier to invite when you know what they love," Nico said.

By supper, his notebook was full. It had drawings of pastries, horseshoes, card suits, tops, drums, flowers, and a messy sketch of a kite.

## The Big Party

Nico asked the castle steward for ribbons, tables, chalk, and permission to use the courtyard.

"What kind of party is this?" the steward asked.

"A try-each-other's-games party," Nico said.

On Saturday, the courtyard filled with small stations. Charlotte showed children how to shape pastry birds. George let everyone brush a gentle pony. Amira taught top-spinning on the flat stones. Ben ran a card game where the rules were explained twice, slowly, so no one felt silly.

At first, children stayed near the stations they already knew. Then the smell of warm pastry pulled the stable children toward Charlotte's table. The spinning tops made the castle children kneel on the stones beside the town children. Laughter traveled farther than shyness.

Nico did not have to push anyone. He only kept asking, "What would you like to try next?"

## Cleaning the Courtyard

After the party, the courtyard looked cheerful and untidy. Paper scraps, chalk dust, crumbs, and ribbons covered the stones.

Nico fetched a broom. One by one, the others joined him.

"We should paint a game board here," Amira said, pointing to the biggest flat stones.

"And build a shelf for tops and cards," George added.

"And a table for snacks," Charlotte said. "A sturdy one."

The next week, they worked together. Ben measured planks. George held nails. Charlotte brought cinnamon rolls for breaks. Amira painted bright circles on the stones, and Nico made sure every helper's name went on the back of the new shelf.

The courtyard changed from a place where groups stood apart into a place where projects began.

## The Castle's New Beginning

The new game shelf became the busiest spot in the castle. Children borrowed tops, cards, chalk, hoops, and beanbags. They made new games by mixing old ones together.

Nico still noticed differences. Charlotte still loved baking most. George still smelled faintly of hay. Amira still spun tops better than anyone. Ben still liked rules written clearly before a game began.

But now those differences helped the games grow.

When someone new came to the courtyard, Nico did not say, "Fit in." He asked, "What do you love doing?"

Then he found a place for that gift beside the others.
