## Story

## The Talking Horse

The young knights of Meadowkeep loved adventure. They polished their armor, packed oatcakes, and rode out each week to explore hills, woods, and old stone roads.

One morning, Sir Lina, Sir Tomas, and Sir Bram heard a sneeze behind a blackberry bush.

"Bushes do not sneeze," said Lina.

"Not unless they have hay fever," said a voice.

The knights pushed aside the branches and found a horse with a golden mane and bright eyes.

Tomas stared. "Did you say that?"

"I did," said the horse. "My name is Juniper. I would bow, but I am tangled in blackberries."

The knights freed him carefully. Juniper thanked them, ate six berries, and asked where they were going.

"Looking for adventure," Bram said.

"Excellent," Juniper replied. "Adventure is easier when someone knows the roads."

## Building a Friendship

Juniper was funny, but he was not foolish. He knew which bridges creaked, which mushrooms glowed only in moonlight, and which village wells ran dry after three rainless days.

The knights learned quickly that Juniper liked being asked, not ordered.

"Can you carry the packs?" Bram asked one day.

"I can carry two packs," Juniper said. "The third smells like onions and must walk by itself."

Lina laughed and moved the onion pack to her own shoulder.

In return, the knights brushed burrs from Juniper's tail, shared apples, and listened when he said a path felt wrong. Soon he was a full part of the team.

## Trouble in the Cave

During a search for an old bell said to be hidden in a cave, Tomas slipped on wet stone and twisted his ankle.

The cave was dim. Rain pattered outside. Tomas tried to stand, then winced.

"I can help," Juniper said. "There is moonleaf near the cave mouth. It cools swelling. But do not pick the silver-veined leaves. Those make your tongue blue."

Bram fetched the moonleaf. Lina wrapped Tomas's ankle with a clean cloth. Juniper lay down so Tomas could get onto his back without jumping.

They did not find the old bell that day, but they found something more useful: the habit of stopping to care for one another before searching for treasure.

## The Worried Dragon

A week later, smoke rose near the village of Alderford. The knights rode hard and found a young dragon beside the millpond, snorting sparks into the reeds.

Villagers hid behind shutters. The dragon flapped one wing awkwardly and roared whenever anyone came close.

"We need a plan," Lina said.

"We need quiet," Juniper answered. "That dragon is startled."

Tomas noticed a torn net wrapped around the dragon's wing. Bram saw that the mill bell kept clanging in the wind, making the dragon jump.

Juniper stepped forward and began humming a low, steady tune.

The dragon stopped roaring for one breath.

"Keep humming," Lina whispered.

## A Song Opens the Way

The knights joined Juniper's tune with a flute, a small drum, and Bram's surprisingly gentle singing voice.

The dragon's sparks faded to smoke. Its head lowered. While the music played, Lina moved slowly toward the torn net.

"We are helping," she said. "No tricks."

Juniper kept the rhythm steady. Tomas loosened the net from the wing. Bram held the mill bell still so it would stop clanging.

When the last knot came free, the dragon stretched both wings. It did not burn the mill. It dipped its head, sneezed one puff of harmless smoke, and launched into the sky.

The villagers cheered so loudly that Juniper flattened his ears.

"A little softer," he said. "Some of us have excellent hearing."

## True Friendship

That evening, the knights and Juniper returned to Meadowkeep tired and proud.

The captain of the guard asked how they had driven away the dragon.

"We did not drive it away," Lina said. "We helped it leave safely."

"Juniper knew it was startled," Tomas added.

"And Bram can sing," said Juniper. "Please write that down. He will deny it later."

Bram turned red, and everyone laughed.

After that, when the young knights packed for adventure, Juniper checked the map with them. He did not have armor or a sword, but he had wisdom, jokes, and a way of hearing worry beneath loud roars.

The knights had found him tangled in blackberries. They kept him because he helped the whole team become kinder, cleverer, and braver.
