_Lila and Max Follow the Map Room Clues_

Lila and Max are two cousins visiting their grandparents for the summer. One day while playing hide-and-seek, they notice a hidden door behind an old tapestry. Their grandparents lead them through the passage with lanterns, family stories, and clear rules about what may be touched. The cousins discover a map room, a harmless book of castle records, and a mystery they can solve together.

## Story

## The Secret Passageway

Lila and Max spent the summer with their grandparents in a stone castle on a windy hill. The castle had towers, tapestries, and more doors than Max could count.

During hide-and-seek, Lila hid behind a blue tapestry stitched with silver stars. She noticed a narrow handle set into the wall.

"Max! Come here!" she whispered.

"What is it?" Max asked.

"A door, maybe," Lila said. "But we should ask first."

They ran to the library, where Grandmother was labeling old photographs.

"You found the north passage," she said. "It is safe with lanterns and grown-ups. Shall we go after tea?"

Lila and Max agreed at once.

## Treasures and Tales

Grandfather brought two lanterns and opened the hidden door. The passage smelled of dust and cold stone.

"Stay between us," Grandmother said. "Hands off the walls unless we say otherwise."

They passed a shelf of old helmets, a cracked shield, and a row of maps rolled in red ribbon.

"Were those used by knights?" asked Max.

"Some were," said Grandfather. "Some were made for parades. Real history is quieter than most stories."

The passage led to a small map room. Sunlight came through a high slit window, making one table glow.

On it lay a map of the castle with tiny ink drawings of doors, stairs, and gardens.

## Ghostly Whispers

As they studied the map, a soft whisper moved through the wall.

"Did you hear that?" Max whispered.

"I heard it," said Lila.

"So did I," said Grandmother. She smiled and pointed to a narrow pipe near the ceiling. "The wind travels through old speaking tubes. Listen."

The whisper came again.

"It sounds like someone saying broom," Max said.

Grandfather laughed. "Then perhaps the castle wants sweeping."

Lila followed the pipe on the map. It led from the map room to the old kitchen.

## The Castle House Book

On a shelf beneath the map table was a brown leather book. Gold letters on the cover read: Castle House Book.

"Is it magic?" asked Max.

"Better," said Grandmother. "It is records."

She opened it on the table. The pages listed repairs, festivals, misplaced keys, and strange notes from people who had lived in the castle long ago.

Lila read one line aloud:

"When the west hall whispers, check the kitchen grate."

Max looked at the map. "The wind pipe goes to the kitchen too."

"Then we have a mystery," Grandfather said.

## The Kitchen Grate

The old kitchen was cool and empty. Copper pans hung in a neat row. A black grate sat under the far window.

"There," said Lila. "Behind the grate."

Grandfather used a brush to clear dust away. A small wooden whistle rolled out.

When the wind blew through the pipe, it crossed the whistle and made the whispering sound.

Max held it up. "So the ghost was a whistle."

"An old whistle," said Grandmother. "And a good clue."

They wrapped it in cloth and labeled it for the castle cabinet.

## Saving the Story

Back in the map room, Lila marked the kitchen grate with a pencil note on a copy of the map.

"This will help the next person," she said.

Max added another note: Wind whistle found today.

Grandfather placed the whistle in a small box. Grandmother wrote the date on a card.

"Castles stay alive when people care for their stories," she said.

Max looked around the room. "Can we come back tomorrow?"

"Yes," said Grandfather. "Tomorrow we dust the map shelves."

Max made a face.

Lila grinned. "An adventure with chores."

## The Magic of Courage and Curiosity

That evening, Lila and Max sat by the fire and told their grandparents the whole story again, even though their grandparents had been there for most of it.

"The whisper was a whistle," said Max.

"The book was not spells," said Lila.

"The map led us there," said Max.

"And asking first got us lanterns," said Lila.

Grandmother poured cocoa into four mugs.

"That is usually how the best castle adventures begin," she said. "With a question."
