## Story

## King Lionheart's Invitation

King Lionheart lived in a hilltop castle with wide gates and sunny windows. He liked nothing better than seeing his friends gathered around one long table.

"Let us have a garden supper," he told Owl. "Nothing fancy. Soup, bread, berries, and enough chairs for everyone."

Owl wrote the invitations carefully. Rabbit brought flowers for the tables. Squirrel polished acorn cups. Bee promised a little honey for the tea.

By sunset, the castle smelled of warm bread.

## A Grand Welcome at the Castle

Guests arrived in cheerful lines: rabbits, foxes, badgers, birds, mice, and one shy hedgehog carrying a napkin twice his size.

"Welcome," King Lionheart said at the gate. "Find a seat under the lanterns."

The guests admired the painted shields in the hall and the moon-shaped fountain in the courtyard. King Lionheart did not hurry them. A good supper, he thought, began before the first spoonful.

Then Deer arrived with her twins.

Then Mole arrived with six cousins.

Then a whole family of sparrows fluttered down from the roof.

Owl looked at the table. "We may need more bowls."

## The Feast

King Lionheart counted the soup bowls. He counted the bread rolls. He counted the guests again.

"I invited friends," he said softly, "but I did not plan for friends of friends."

The animals grew quiet. No one wanted to take more than their share.

Owl hopped onto the bench beside the king. "A feast can change shape," she said. "Ask what everyone can add."

King Lionheart stood and cleared his throat.

"Friends, I planned a small supper. You have made it a bigger, happier one. Does anyone have something nearby to share?"

## Owl's Advice

The courtyard became busy at once.

Rabbit fetched carrot sticks from her basket. Squirrel added roasted chestnuts. Bee drizzled honey into a teapot. Mole's cousins carried small potatoes from their wagon. The sparrows found extra napkins and folded them into triangles.

King Lionheart sent the kitchen helpers for more water and another pot.

Owl sorted the table into little stations: soup here, bread there, fruit near the fountain, tiny seeds for tiny guests by the low wall.

"Now everyone can reach," she said.

## Room for Everyone

When the food was ready, King Lionheart served the smallest guests first.

"One spoon for Mouse. One spoon for Mole. One crumb for Sparrow."

Bear broke his roll in half and gave one piece to Fox.

"I had a snack before I came," Bear said.

Fox passed berries to Hedgehog.

"I can reach the high bowl," she said.

Soon plates were moving kindly in every direction. No one had a mountain of food. No one had an empty plate.

## The Shared Feast

The supper tasted better than King Lionheart had planned. The soup had carrots from Rabbit, potatoes from Mole, and herbs from the castle garden.

The tea tasted of Bee's honey. The fruit bowl had Squirrel's chestnuts tucked around the edges. For dessert, the kitchen brought out one round cake and cut it into many small slices.

"Small slices taste wonderful when everyone has one," said Hedgehog.

King Lionheart laughed. "Especially with honey tea."

## King Lionheart's Grand Feast

When the lanterns burned low, the guests helped clear the table. Bear carried benches. Sparrow gathered crumbs. Mole's cousins stacked the empty bowls.

King Lionheart stood beside Owl and looked at the courtyard.

"I thought I had made a mistake," he said.

"You made room," Owl replied. "Then everyone else did too."

The next time King Lionheart sent invitations, he added one extra line:

"Bring yourself, and if you like, bring one small thing for the table."
