# Max and Milo's Magical Mess

_Two Mischievous Mice Ask Permission_

Max and Milo are two curious mice who love Queen Rabbit's garden. When they touch a plant potion without asking, the beans and cabbages grow far too fast. The mice tell the truth, ask for help, and work with Queen Rabbit and the castle goats to put the garden right.

## Story

## The Accidental Potion Spill

Max and Milo were tiny castle mice with quick feet and quicker noses. Their favorite place was Queen Rabbit's garden, where the lettuce grew in neat rows and the pea vines curled around silver strings.

One morning, they found a blue bottle on the potting bench.

"Plant Growth Potion," Max read slowly.

"Queen Rabbit uses that," said Milo. "We should leave it where it is."

Max leaned closer anyway. His whiskers tickled the cork. Milo tried to pull him back, their tails tangled, and the bottle tipped.

Glug.

Blue drops splashed into the bean bed.

For one quiet second, nothing happened. Then the bean vines stretched upward like green ribbons. The cabbages puffed round as pillows.

Max swallowed. "We need Queen Rabbit."

## Trouble in the Garden

Queen Rabbit came running when Max and Milo knocked on the kitchen door.

"We spilled the potion," Milo said.

"We touched it without asking," Max added.

Queen Rabbit looked at the garden. Beans curled over the arch. Cabbage leaves covered the stepping stones. A carrot top waved above the fence like a little tree.

She took a slow breath.

"Thank you for telling me quickly," she said. "Now we can fix it quickly."

Max fetched labels. Milo fetched twine. Queen Rabbit put on her gardening gloves and moved the potion bottle safely into a locked cabinet.

## Careful Helpers in the Garden

The garden was too big for tiny mouse paws and rabbit gloves by themselves.

"We need careful helpers," said Queen Rabbit.

She rang the small brass bell by the gate. Soon three castle goats trotted in: Pippa, Plum, and Pickle.

"Only the marked leaves," Queen Rabbit said, tying red ribbons around the overgrown weeds and bean vines. "Not the young lettuce. Not the roses."

The goats nodded and began to nibble exactly where she pointed.

Max and Milo carried fallen peas in acorn-cap baskets. They were not fast, but they were careful.

## The Giant Carrot

By afternoon, the tall beans were shorter. The stepping stones appeared again. The giant carrot top still leaned over the fountain.

"That one is too tough for nibbling," said Pippa the goat.

Queen Rabbit studied the carrot. "Then we harvest it."

She loosened the soil with a trowel while the goats pulled gently on a rope tied around the carrot greens. Max and Milo counted.

"One, two, pull."

Pop!

The carrot slid free. It was as long as a broom.

"Soup," Queen Rabbit said.

"Lots of soup," said Milo.

## Soup in the Courtyard

When the work was done, Queen Rabbit set out bowls of carrot soup in the courtyard.

The goats made a hopping game around the empty baskets. Max and Milo joined, but they stayed far away from the potting bench.

"No touching mystery bottles," Max said.

"No touching anything with a cork," said Milo.

Queen Rabbit overheard and smiled.

## Three Drops

The next morning, Queen Rabbit gave Max and Milo a new job.

"You may water the basil," she said, handing them a thimble-sized can. "Three drops each. I will watch the first time."

Max tipped one drop.

Milo tipped one drop.

Max tipped the third.

"Perfect," Queen Rabbit said.

The mice stood proudly beside the basil pot.

## The Garden Stays Peaceful

The garden grew neatly again. The beans curled up their strings. The cabbages stayed cabbage-sized. The potion bottle stayed locked away unless Queen Rabbit was there to use it.

Sometimes Max and Milo still felt curious. When they did, they asked.

"What does this seed do?"

"Why do roses need pruning?"

"May we help with the mint?"

Queen Rabbit answered when she could and said "not today" when she needed to.

The mice listened. The garden stayed peaceful. And every now and then, a goat stopped by to check whether any giant carrots had returned.
