## Story

## The Curse

In a bright kingdom by the sea stood a castle with blue flags and white stone walls. Prince Leo lived there with his family and knew every stair, bell, and garden path.

One morning, a thin crack appeared above the bakery door.

"Stone should not crack there," said Mara, the royal mason.

By lunch, three more cracks had appeared. By supper, silver dust shivered from the tower wall.

The librarian found a note tucked under the gate:

"Answer what holds a castle up, or watch it shift."

King Alexander frowned. "That sounds like Sorrel the sorcerer's riddles."

## The Call for Volunteers

The king gathered the castle helpers in the great hall.

"We need to understand the riddle," he said. "Everyone works with a partner. No one touches cracked stone without Mara."

Prince Leo raised his hand. "May I help read the old records?"

The king looked at him carefully. "With the librarian."

"And may I help ask Sorrel what he means?"

"With me," said the king.

Leo nodded. It felt good to be trusted, and serious too.

## The Search Begins

Leo and the librarian searched the oldest shelf in the tower room. Mara checked the walls below and marked each crack with chalk.

"Here," Leo said, pulling out a book with a blue ribbon. "A story about the first castle stones."

The librarian opened it gently. The page showed a foundation beneath the castle.

"A castle is not held up by flags or towers," Leo read. "It is held by stones below, fitted tightly together."

Mara came in with chalk on her sleeve. "The foundation stones. That is where we look next."

## Riddles with the Sorcerer

Sorrel the sorcerer lived in a crooked cottage beyond the herb garden. The king, Leo, Mara, and the librarian walked there together.

Sorrel opened the door before they knocked. His eyebrows were long, and his teacup steamed with peppermint.

"You found my note," he said.

"And the cracks," said King Alexander.

Leo stepped forward. "Does the riddle mean the foundation stones?"

Sorrel's eyebrows lifted. "Good. And what holds foundation stones together?"

Leo looked at Mara.

"Careful fitting," Mara said.

"Mortar," said the librarian.

Leo thought of everyone standing together in the hall. "And people who repair problems before they grow."

Sorrel smiled into his tea. "Then you have answered enough to break the warning spell."

## Prince Leo's Repair Work

Sorrel had not meant to destroy the castle. He had seen the foundation stones shifting and used a dramatic spell to make the cracks visible.

"You could have knocked," said the king.

Sorrel looked embarrassed. "I wanted the riddle to be memorable."

"It was," said Leo. "Also startling."

Mara led them to the foundation room beneath the castle. One old support wedge had loosened after heavy rain.

No sword could fix that. No shout could fix it either.

Mara mixed mortar. The king held the lantern. Leo passed tools when Mara asked. Sorrel used a small steadying spell to keep dust out of everyone's eyes.

## Homecoming for Prince Leo

By evening, the cracks stopped spreading. The castle bells rang once, not for a parade, but to tell everyone the walls were safe.

The kitchen sent soup to the repair crew. The librarian copied the riddle into the castle records, with a note: Ask clearly next time.

Sorrel read the note and sighed. "Fair."

King Alexander thanked Mara first. Then the librarian. Then Sorrel, though a bit sternly. Then Leo.

"You were brave," the king said.

Leo looked at the repaired wall. "I was worried."

"Bravery often has worry in it," said Mara. "You kept thinking anyway."

## Prince Leo Helps the Castle

The next morning, Leo helped Mara inspect the bakery wall. The crack was still there, but it had not grown.

"We will patch this one today," Mara said.

Leo carried the small tool basket.

At lunch, Sorrel arrived at the gate with a plain note instead of a riddle.

"May I help check the north tower?"

Leo grinned. "Much clearer."

The castle stood steady in the sun, held up by stones, mortar, good questions, and many careful hands.
