In King Arthur's castle, a group of young squires dream of becoming knights someday. Their training begins with listening, helping, safe practice, and learning how to serve their community. ## Story

## The Dream of Becoming Knights

In the days of King Arthur, several young squires lived and learned at Camelot. They dreamed of becoming knights someday, but Sir Brigid, their trainer, began with a surprise.

"A knight's first tool is not a sword," she said.

"A shield?" asked Owen.

"A horse?" asked Bram.

"A listening ear," said Sir Brigid.

The squires looked at one another. Listening did not shine like armor, but Sir Brigid seemed quite serious.

## Squires-in-Training!

The squires' first morning began in the courtyard.

The blacksmith showed them how armor was cleaned and stored. No one touched the forge. No one lifted heavy pieces without help.

"Care keeps people safe," the blacksmith said.

The stable master taught them how to brush a calm horse and where to stand so they would not startle it.

"Respect keeps animals safe," she said.

The quartermaster showed them how to count blankets, water skins, and sacks of grain.

"Planning keeps villages safe," he said.

By lunch, the squires had not swung a sword once. They were still tired.

## Crates to the Storeroom

The next week, Sir Brigid gave them a teamwork drill.

"Move these empty crates from the gate to the storeroom," she said. "No rushing. No showing off."

Owen grabbed the first crate by himself. It tipped sideways and bumped his knee.

"Too fast," said Bram.

"Too much for one squire," said Sir Brigid.

They tried again. Two squires lifted each crate while one walked ahead to clear the path and one opened the storeroom door.

"Together," said Owen, rubbing his knee, "works better."

## The Challenges of Becoming a Knight

Training still included practice, but it was careful practice.

They learned balance on low beams over soft straw. They practiced archery with blunt-tipped arrows at straw targets while Sir Brigid watched every shot. They carried water pails without spilling.

"I am nervous about the bow," said Ellis.

"Then you may start by watching," said Sir Brigid.

Ellis watched. Then he held the bow. Then he shot one arrow. It landed far from the center, but safely in the straw.

"That counts," said Sir Brigid.

Ellis smiled.

## The Day of the Oath

After a month of practice, the squires did not become knights. They were still young, and everyone knew training took years.

But King Arthur invited them to the hall for a squire's promise.

"What have you learned?" he asked.

"Listen first," said Owen.

"Work together," said Bram.

"Ask before using tools," said Ellis.

King Arthur nodded. "Those promises are strong foundations."

Each squire received a blue cord to tie around one wrist as a reminder.

## The First Mission

Soon after, a messenger arrived from a nearby village. A storm had knocked down a sheep fence and scattered supplies from the market shed.

"The knights will repair the fence," said Sir Brigid. "The squires will help with safe jobs."

In the village, Owen counted blankets. Bram carried small bundles of rope. Ellis filled water bowls for the sheep after the shepherd showed him where to place them.

No one scrambled up broken posts. No one handled sharp tools. They did the jobs they had trained for.

By sunset, the sheep were calm, the blankets were dry, and the market shed was tidy.

## The Adventures of the Knights

On the ride home in the supply cart, the squires were quiet with tiredness.

"Was that a real mission?" asked Owen.

"Yes," said Sir Brigid.

"But there was no sword fighting," said Bram.

"Most good service is quieter than a sword drill," said Sir Brigid. "A dry blanket, a closed gate, a calm sheep. Those things matter."

Ellis looked at the blue cord around his wrist.

"Then I did knight work today," he said.

"Squire work," Sir Brigid corrected gently. "And good work it was."
