## Story

## The Old Path

In a lush forest filled with tall trees and colorful flowers lived a group of animal friends. There was Lenny, who noticed every footprint; Sammy, who remembered every turning; Timmy, who took his time; and Betsy, who loved a good picnic.

One bright morning, they found a stone path almost hidden under ferns. At its end stood an old castle with ivy on the walls and sunlight shining through the empty windows.

"It looks exciting," said Lenny.

"It also looks old," said Timmy. "Old places can have loose stones."

So they fetched Elder Hazel, the forest's careful guide. She checked the path, tapped the stones with her walking stick, and showed them where it was safe to step.

"Stay together," she said. "Look with your eyes first. Ask before touching."

The friends nodded and entered the sunny courtyard in a neat little line.

## The Singing Shutter

The castle was quiet until the wind slid through a broken shutter.

"Whooooo," moaned the shutter.

Betsy stepped closer to Elder Hazel. Sammy's tail puffed up.

Then a white curtain lifted in the window and flapped like a waving shape.

"A ghost!" whispered Lenny.

Elder Hazel held up one paw. "Maybe. Or maybe the castle is using its old windows to sing. Let us find out calmly."

They watched the curtain rise and dip with the breeze. When the wind stopped, the white shape stopped too.

"That is a polite ghost," said Timmy.

Everyone giggled, and the room felt much less mysterious.

## Uncovering Secrets

Inside the great hall, the friends found a dusty table, a row of faded shields, and a drawer with a small brass label.

"May we open it?" asked Sammy.

"I will check it first," said Elder Hazel.

The drawer slid open with a soft scrape. Inside was an old diary wrapped in cloth. Elder Hazel lifted it to the table and turned the first page.

"This castle was once a shelter during storms," she read. "Travelers waited here with warm soup, dry blankets, and songs."

The friends looked around at the empty room. It was easier to imagine it full of lanterns and friendly voices now.

"Maybe it can be useful again," said Betsy.

## Staying Together

As they crossed the next room, a door banged shut in the wind.

"Freeze and count," Elder Hazel said.

The friends counted their group.

"One, two, three, four, five," said Sammy. "All here."

"Good," said Elder Hazel. "When something startles us, we stop first. Running can make a small problem bigger."

Lenny took a slow breath. Betsy held the picnic basket steady. Timmy pointed to a bright ribbon tied near the doorway.

"Our path marker is still there," he said. "We know the way back."

## The Tapping Pot

In the old kitchen, the friends found the source of another strange sound.

A loose pot hung from a hook. Each time the wind came through the chimney, the pot tapped the wall.

"Tap. Tap. Tap," said Timmy, tapping back with one claw.

The sound answered in the same rhythm. Everyone laughed again.

Then Betsy noticed an old chest near the hearth.

"It might be part of the shelter," she said.

Elder Hazel checked the lid and opened it carefully. Inside were folded blankets, wooden cups, and a painted sign that read, "Welcome, travelers. Rest here until the storm passes."

The castle was not trying to scare anyone. It had been waiting to help.

## The Castle Mystery

"We know the white shape was a curtain," said Sammy.

"The moan was a shutter," said Lenny.

"The tapping was a pot," said Timmy.

"And the chest was full of blankets," said Betsy.

Elder Hazel wrote each answer on a scrap of paper and placed it beside the matching place. By the time they finished, the castle had turned from spooky to sensible.

They swept leaves from the dry corner of the hall and carried the clean blankets into the sun. Betsy shook crumbs from the picnic cloth. Sammy hung the welcome sign by the doorway.

## Courage With a Guide

The friends left before dusk, exactly as Elder Hazel had planned.

"I was unsure at first," said Lenny.

"Me too," said Betsy. "But checking the sounds helped."

"And staying together helped," said Sammy.

The next rainy day, the old castle opened as a forest shelter. Travelers found dry blankets, a tidy table, and a sign painted by the animal friends:

"Welcome. The shutters may sing, but the soup is warm."
