## Story

## The Missing Gemstone

Princess Isabella loved the castle history room. Every shield, ring, and ribbon had a label, and every label held a story.

One morning, she visited with Captain Rena, who kept the room keys.

"The moonstone looks beautiful in the east window," Isabella said.

Captain Rena stopped. The velvet cushion inside the case was empty.

"The moonstone is missing," she said.

Isabella's stomach tightened. "What do we do first?"

"We close the room, tell the king and queen, and write down what we know," said Captain Rena.

Isabella fetched paper.

## Exploring the Castle

Isabella did not search by herself. She and Captain Rena spoke to people who had been near the history room that morning.

The window washer had cleaned the east window.

"I moved the curtain, not the case," he said.

The maid had dusted the hallway table.

"I saw Lady Catherine carrying blue sewing cloth," she said.

The cook had delivered lemon cakes.

"No moonstones in the kitchen," he said, "but there was a draft strong enough to slam the side door."

Isabella wrote everything down, even the draft.

## Princess Isabella Finds a Clue

In the courtyard, Isabella noticed a thread caught on a rose thorn. It was pale blue.

"This may be from Lady Catherine's sewing cloth," she said.

Captain Rena placed the thread in a small envelope. Then they found Lady Catherine in the solar, mending a banner.

"That is from my cloth," Lady Catherine said. "I carried it through the courtyard when the wind blew my pattern papers everywhere."

"Did you enter the history room?" asked Isabella.

"No," said Lady Catherine. "But I passed the east window outside."

Isabella looked at her notes. East window. Strong draft. Blue cloth in the courtyard.

## A Surprising Discovery

Back in the history room, Isabella stood by the east window.

The moonstone case sat beneath it. The latch was closed, but the display cloth had wrinkled toward the back.

"Could the stone have rolled?" Isabella asked.

Captain Rena unlocked the case. Isabella did not touch it. She only looked.

Behind the velvet cushion was a narrow gap.

"There is dust missing there," Captain Rena said.

Isabella imagined the side door slamming, the curtain moving, and the cushion shifting.

"Maybe no one took it," she said. "Maybe it slipped."

## Uncovering More Clues

Captain Rena brought a thin wooden ruler and gently checked behind the cushion.

Click.

Something rolled into view: the moonstone, bright and round, tucked under the back lip of the case.

"Found," said Captain Rena.

Isabella let out a breath she had been holding.

The stone had not been stolen. It had slipped when the draft moved the curtain, bumped the case, and wrinkled the velvet cushion.

"Good thing we asked questions before blaming anyone," Isabella said.

## The Case is Solved!

The jeweler cleaned the moonstone and checked the display case. Captain Rena added a small back rail so nothing could roll behind the cushion again.

Lady Catherine was relieved.

"I was worried my cloth meant I had done something wrong," she said.

"The cloth helped us understand the wind," said Isabella.

The cook sent lemon cakes to the history room, because even careful detectives need a snack.

## What Changed

That afternoon, Isabella made a new checklist for the history room.

Windows closed before cases are opened.

Velvet cushions checked after cleaning.

Questions asked before guesses become accusations.

Captain Rena read the list and nodded. "That last one may be the most important."

Isabella placed the checklist beside the door, where every future visitor could see it.
