## Story

## The Wise Old Owl

In a faraway kingdom, an old owl lived in the top room of a castle tower. His window overlooked the meadow, the orchard, the pond, and the winding road through the village.

The owl did not know everything, and he never pretended that he did. What made him wise was the way he listened. He asked gentle questions. He noticed details. He gave creatures time to think.

Animals visited him when they felt unsure. Some brought big worries. Some brought small puzzles. The owl welcomed each one with the same calm voice.

"Tell me what happened first," he would say. "Then we will look for the next step."

## The Little Rabbit's Worry

One sunny day, a little rabbit was hopping in the meadow when he realized he had wandered past the blackberry hedge. The grass looked taller than before, and the path home was hard to see.

He stopped, sat still, and looked for a helper. The castle tower stood nearby, and the owl was watching from the lower window.

"I cannot find my burrow," called the rabbit.

"Stay where I can see you," said the owl. "Now tell me what you passed."

The rabbit remembered a puddle, a clover patch, and a fallen log.

"Good noticing," said the owl. "Follow the log to the clover, then look for the path with smooth stones. I will stay at the window until you reach the hedge."

The rabbit followed each landmark and soon found his mother waiting by the burrow.

"I remembered clues," he told her. "And I asked before I kept wandering."

## The Monkey's Big Jokes

One sunny afternoon, the wise old owl heard a knock at the door. His friend the monkey stood there with a worried look on his face.

"What is wrong?" asked the wise old owl.

"I want to impress my friends," said the monkey. "I keep making bigger jokes, but now they look tired when I arrive."

"What do they enjoy doing with you?" asked the owl.

"Climbing. Sharing fruit. Making up songs," said the monkey.

"And what happens when the jokes get too big?"

"Sometimes someone gets splashed or startled," the monkey said quietly.

The owl nodded. "You can be playful and still notice how others feel."

The monkey visited his friends with a basket of mangoes and a new song instead of a prank. They sang so loudly that even the tower window seemed to hum along.

## More Visitors to the Tower

The word spread that the owl's tower was a good place to think. More animals began to visit, but the owl did not give every answer himself.

Missy Mouse came because she kept losing her way between the grain shed and the mill.

"Let us make a map with three landmarks," said the owl.

Freddie Fox came because he wanted to move through trees like the monkeys.

"Your paws are made for running softly," said the owl. "What could you practice that fits your own feet?"

Freddie tried tracking leaves in the orchard and discovered he was good at it.

The owl kept a basket of smooth pebbles by the door. Each visitor moved one pebble from the left bowl to the right bowl after choosing a next step. By sunset, the right bowl often shone full.

## Trouble in the Kingdom

One misty morning, something confusing happened in the kingdom. The fog was so thick that the orchard looked like the pond, the pond looked like the meadow, and the meadow seemed to have no edge at all.

Animals bumped into fences, missed meeting places, and called to one another from the wrong paths.

"The whole kingdom is mixed up," said the rabbit.

"Then the whole kingdom can help make it clear," said the owl.

## A Visit to The Wise Old Owl

The animals gathered at the foot of the tower where everyone could hear.

"We need signals," said the owl. "Not rushing. Not guessing. Clear signals."

The woodpecker offered to tap three times from the orchard. The frogs offered to croak from the pond. The sheep wore bright ribbons so the meadow path was easier to follow.

The monkey moved along the low branches and tied scraps of red cloth where paths turned. The rabbit and Missy Mouse placed smooth stones along the route to the burrows.

Everyone had a useful job.

## Clearing the Fog

By noon, the fog was still thick, but the kingdom no longer felt mixed up.

Tap, tap, tap meant orchard. Croak, croak meant pond. Red cloth meant turn here. Smooth stones meant burrows ahead.

The owl flew short circles between the tower and the tallest elm, calling what he could see.

"The bridge is clear. The market road is clear. Wait at the oak until the cart passes."

Step by step, the animals found their way.

## Morning in the Courtyard

When the sun finally warmed the fog away, the animals met in the castle courtyard.

"The owl saved the day," said Freddie Fox.

"We all did," said the owl. "I listened from the tower, but you made the signals, tied the ribbons, placed the stones, and waited for one another."

The rabbit looked at the smooth stone in his paw. "Can we leave the markers up?"

"Yes," said Missy Mouse. "They may help someone tomorrow."

So the markers stayed. The kingdom became easier to travel, even on clear days.

## The Listening Tower

The owl's tower became known as the Listening Tower.

Animals still came with worries. The owl still asked what happened first. Sometimes he suggested a map. Sometimes he suggested an apology. Sometimes he suggested a rest and a snack before deciding anything at all.

On quiet evenings, the owl looked out over the meadow, the orchard, the pond, and the winding road. Below, bright ribbons fluttered on the paths, and smooth stones shone where small feet could find them.
