## Story

## The Circus Train Stops

Ellie the elephant was traveling with the circus train when it slowed, rattled, and rolled to a gentle stop beside a small town.

Engineer Rosa stepped down and checked the engine. "A belt has slipped, and one toolbox is missing the right wrench," she told the ringmaster. "No one should touch the engine except the repair crew."

Ellie listened carefully. She wanted to help, but she also knew that big jobs needed the right people.

## Meeting Lily

While the crew set out warning cones, Ellie waited with her keeper near the station garden.

A girl with curly hair waved from the fence. "Hello. Are you waiting for the train too?"

Ellie lifted her trunk in greeting.

"This is Ellie," her keeper said. "And I am Sam."

"I am Lily," said the girl. "My aunt runs the hardware shop. If the engineer needs a tool, maybe we can ask her."

Sam smiled. "That would be useful. We will walk together and stay on the sidewalk."

## Gathering Supplies

Lily's aunt found the wrench Engineer Rosa had requested. She also gave them a clean rag, a small oil can, and a paper bag of apples for the waiting performers.

Ellie carried the apples in her trunk basket. Lily carried the rag and oil can. Sam carried the wrench.

When they returned, Rosa checked every item before using it.

"Thank you," she said. "You brought exactly what I asked for."

Lily stood a safe distance away and watched the repair crew work.

## Waiting Well

Fixing the train took time. The younger performers grew restless, and the musicians worried they would miss the evening show.

Lily had an idea. "Could we make a quiet waiting game?"

She drew a train on a sheet of paper and added one carriage for each group: clowns, musicians, dancers, cooks, and animal keepers. Ellie placed an apple beside each carriage as the group checked in.

Soon everyone knew who was present, who had water, and who needed help finding a bag.

The waiting felt less muddled because Lily and Ellie had made it organized.

## The Train Rolls Again

At last, Engineer Rosa wiped her hands and grinned.

"All repaired. Thank you for giving the crew space to work."

The performers cheered. Ellie swayed happily, and Lily clapped until her palms tingled.

"You helped by listening," Rosa told Lily. "That matters."

Lily looked at Ellie. "And you helped by carrying apples."

Ellie gently offered Lily the last one.

## Moving Forward

Before the train left, the ringmaster gave Lily a paper ticket for the next time the circus came to town.

"You and Ellie made a good station team," he said.

Lily waved as the train pulled away. Ellie watched from the open carriage window until the town grew small behind them.

The trip had not gone as planned, but it had brought a new friend, a careful repair, and a useful reminder: helping starts with listening to what is needed.
