## Story

## Max's Dream

Max loved the circus magician most of all. He liked the quiet moments before a trick: the careful folding of a scarf, the tap of a wand, the smile that told the audience to look closely.

At home, Max practiced with playing cards and paper cups. His dog Buddy watched from the rug, wagging whenever Max bowed.

One Saturday, Magician Mira invited children to try out for a small helper role in the afternoon show.

"It is a safe beginner trick," Mira told the families. "It needs timing, listening, and a little stage courage."

Max signed his name with a shaky hand.

## Mira Shows Max the Trick

Mira taught Max how to place three bright scarves into a wooden box. When he closed the lid and counted to three, she would open a hidden drawer and pull out a paper flower.

"The magic is in the practice," Mira said. "And in keeping track of every prop."

Buddy stayed on a soft mat beside Max's parents. He was not part of the act, but Max liked seeing his brown ears whenever he felt nervous.

Max practiced the count again and again.

"One, two, three," he whispered. "Smile. Step back. Bow."

## The Missing Flower

On show day, Max arrived early. The scarves were folded. The box was polished. The wand was in its stand.

Then Mira opened the drawer and frowned. The paper flower was gone.

Max's stomach dipped. "Did I do something wrong?"

"No," Mira said. "Props wander when a lot of people are setting up. We will solve it like performers do: calmly."

They checked the table, the trunk, and the music stand. Buddy sniffed the air from his mat and gave one small bark.

## Buddy's Clue

Max looked where Buddy was staring. A corner of red paper peeked from beneath the curtain.

Behind the curtain, the flower lay beside a juggling hoop. A stagehand must have swept it there by mistake.

"Good eye, Buddy," Max said.

Mira checked the flower, smoothed one bent petal, and tucked it back into the drawer. "Now we know why magicians count their props twice."

Max paused and smiled. The problem was fixed, and he had helped fix it.

## Showtime

The tent grew quiet when Mira called Max to the ring.

Max placed the scarves into the box. His hands trembled, but he remembered the steps.

"One," he said.

The children leaned forward.

"Two."

Buddy's tail thumped softly backstage.

"Three."

Mira opened the drawer and lifted the paper flower high. The crowd clapped, and Max grinned before he remembered to bow.

## After the Applause

Mira did not call Max a star. She called him something better.

"You were a careful helper," she said. "You noticed a problem, stayed calm, and did your part."

Max sat beside Buddy after the show and showed him the paper flower. Buddy sniffed it, sneezed, and made Max laugh so hard his bow tie slipped sideways.

Max still dreamed of performing again, but now he knew the best tricks were built from practice, patience, and friends who helped you remember where to look.
