## Story

## The Case of the Missing Juggling Balls

Jolly woke up with three new jokes and one clear plan. He was going to practice his juggling act before the evening show.

But when he opened the prop trunk, the red, yellow, and blue juggling balls were gone.

"That is odd," Jolly said. He checked under his shoes, inside his hat, and behind the squeaky horn. No juggling balls.

Ringmaster Bob looked at the empty trunk. "Start with questions," he said. "Good detectives do not guess first."

## The First Clues

Jolly put on his detective hat, which was his regular hat with a paper badge pinned to it.

The dancers had not seen the balls. The musicians had not borrowed them. Magician Marvin remembered hearing three soft bumps near the snack table.

"Bump, bump, bump," Marvin said. "Like balls rolling down steps."

Jolly wrote that down. Then he noticed a yellow smudge of banana on the trunk latch.

"I know one friend who eats bananas during rehearsal," Jolly said.

## Mr. Monkey Explains

Jolly found Mr. Monkey behind the costume rack. The three balls sat beside him in a neat little tower.

"Did you take my juggling balls?" Jolly asked.

Mr. Monkey nodded slowly.

"Were you trying to make a joke?"

Mr. Monkey nodded again, then covered his eyes.

Jolly sat down beside him. "A joke is better when everyone can laugh. I was worried because I need those for practice."

Mr. Monkey pushed the balls toward him and made a sorry little squeak.

## A Better Trick

Jolly could have rushed away, but he looked at Mr. Monkey's drooping shoulders.

"Would you like to help me make a joke that does not hide anything?"

Mr. Monkey brightened.

Together they planned a simple bit. Jolly would pretend to lose one ball in his oversized pocket. Mr. Monkey would point to it, and the children could call, "It is right there."

They practiced three times. The joke worked every time.

## Rehearsal Ready

When Jolly returned to the ring, Ringmaster Bob checked the clock.

"You found them," he said.

"And I found a helper," Jolly replied.

During rehearsal, Jolly juggled red, yellow, and blue. Then he tucked the blue ball into his pocket and looked around in pretend confusion.

Mr. Monkey pointed. The performers called, "It is right there."

Everyone laughed, including Jolly.

## The Circus Mystery

After the show, Jolly put the juggling balls back into the trunk and closed the latch.

Mr. Monkey handed him a small paper sign that said, Ask before borrowing.

"Good sign," Jolly said. He taped it inside the prop trunk where everyone could see it.

The mystery had not needed shouting or blame. It had needed questions, honesty, and a better place for a playful idea.
