# The Circus Crew

## Story

## The Quiet Ringmaster

The circus was nearly ready when Ringmaster Ben held up a hand and whispered, "My voice is gone."

Monkey tilted his head. Elephant stepped closer. Lion lowered his mane so he could hear.

Ben tried to speak again, but only a tiny squeak came out.

"You should rest your voice," said the stage manager. "We can still help the audience know what comes next."

The circus crew gathered in a circle.

## The Animals Work Together

Monkey found a stack of cue cards. Elephant remembered the order of the acts. Giraffe could see the whole ring from the back curtain.

Lion raised one paw. "I can give a signal, but not a huge roar. A quiet rumble will do."

Ben smiled and wrote on a card: Thank you.

The plan was simple. Monkey would carry each card to the front of the ring. Elephant would point to the next performer. Giraffe would watch for anyone who needed more time. Lion would rumble once when the music should begin.

## Cue Cards in the Ring

The first card said: Welcome.

Monkey held it proudly, though it was almost as big as he was. The audience read it and clapped.

The second card said: Clowns.

Elephant pointed with her trunk, and the clowns rolled in on tiny bicycles.

The third card said: Giraffe's Apple Balance.

Giraffe balanced three apples along a padded tray fastened safely to his costume. He walked slowly around the ring while the musicians played a bouncy tune.

Ben watched from his chair with a cup of warm tea.

## The Show Finds Its Rhythm

By the middle of the show, everyone understood the new signals.

Monkey carried the cards. Elephant checked the order. Giraffe watched the curtains. Lion gave his soft rumble.

No one needed to shout. No one needed to hurry.

When Ben wanted to thank the audience, he held up one final card: You have been wonderful.

The children called, "You too."

Ben laughed silently, which made his shoulders bounce.

## A Backup Plan

After the show, the crew met beside the prop table.

"We should keep cue cards ready every time," Elephant said.

"And extra tea," Monkey added.

Lion practiced his quiet rumble. Giraffe wrote the act order in large letters so everyone could read it.

Ben rested his voice and gave each friend a hug.

The circus had sounded different that day, but it had still felt bright, funny, and full of care. By bedtime, the spare whistle hung beside the ringmaster's hat, ready for the next show.
