# Elefantastic Ellie

## Ellie the Shy Elephant

Ellie was gentle, careful, and good at remembering where everything belonged.

She could carry a basket of flowers without crushing a single petal. She could find the water barrel even in low light. But when the circus band played loudly, Ellie tucked her trunk close and stepped behind the curtain.

"Too much?" asked Tom, her caretaker.

Ellie touched his sleeve with her trunk.

"Too much," Tom said. "We can make it smaller."

## Tom's Quiet Plan

Tom did not begin with a crowd.

He began with one flower basket, one quiet path, and one bell that made a soft sound.

Ting.

Ellie listened.

"Your job can be to carry flowers in the opening parade," Tom said. "Only if you want to."

Ellie picked up the basket and walked three steps.

"That counts," Tom said.

The next day, she walked five steps. The day after that, she walked to the end of the practice ring and back again.

## Building Confidence

Tom added one new thing at a time.

First, Mimi the mouse watched from a stool.

"Lovely flowers," Mimi said.

Ellie finished the path.

Then two clowns watched, but they agreed not to cheer until Ellie was done.

Ellie finished the path again.

Then the drummer tapped a slow beat from far away.

Ellie stopped.

Tom raised his hand, and the drummer stopped too.

"Thank you for telling us," Tom said to Ellie.

They tried again the next morning with an even softer beat.

## Ellie Practices With Tom

Practice did not make Ellie fearless.

It helped her know what to do when nerves arrived.

When her ears fluttered, she paused.

When the drum felt too loud, she looked at Tom.

When she needed a break, she set the basket down beside the blue stool.

"A brave elephant can rest," Tom said.

Ellie liked that rule.

## Showtime

On parade night, the big top glowed with lanterns.

Ellie stood behind the curtain with the flower basket in her trunk.

The band began softly, the way they had practiced.

Tom stood at the edge of the ring. Mimi sat beside him with a tiny flag.

Ellie took one step.

Then another.

The audience watched quietly as she carried the flowers around the ring. When Ellie reached the blue stool, she paused, breathed, and kept going.

At the end, she placed the basket on a low table.

The ringmaster whispered, "May we clap softly?"

Tom looked at Ellie. Ellie lifted her trunk.

The audience clapped like gentle rain.

## Elefantastic Ellie

Ellie did not twirl on a ball or stand on one foot.

She carried flowers with care. She listened to herself. She finished what she had practiced.

To Tom, that was more than enough.

"Elefantastic," he said.

Ellie rumbled proudly.

The next morning, Tom asked, "Same path today?"

Ellie picked up the flower basket, then set it down beside the paint brushes.

Tom smiled. "Or something new."

Ellie chose a yellow flower and placed it in his hat.

That was her whole performance for the morning, and it made Tom laugh.
