## Story

## Ellie, the Quiet Elephant

Ellie liked the quiet side of the circus.

She liked the shade behind the costume wagon. She liked the soft brush her caretaker used after bath time. She liked watching more than being watched.

When the big tent grew loud, Ellie stood beside Mara, her caretaker, and wrapped her trunk gently around a smooth wooden post.

"You can take your time," Mara always said.

Ellie liked those words best.

## Ellie Discovers Painting

One afternoon, workers painted new scenery for the circus stage.

Blue became sky. Green became leaves. A yellow sun appeared with one wide sweep of a brush.

Ellie stepped closer.

"Interested?" asked Noor, the scenery painter.

Ellie lifted her trunk toward the brush, then pulled back.

Noor looked at Mara. "Would she like to try with safe paint?"

Mara checked the paint label, the floor mat, and Ellie's mood. "Only if Ellie wants to."

Noor placed a thick brush on a low table. Ellie picked it up with her trunk, touched it to red paint, and made one careful line across the paper.

Her ears lifted.

## Practice in the Morning

Ellie did not become an artist in one night.

She practiced for ten quiet minutes each morning.

Some lines were wobbly. Some dots became smudges. Once, Ellie sneezed and painted a red speckle on Noor's apron.

Noor laughed. "That one is abstract."

Ellie rumbled shyly.

Mimi the mouse watched from a paint box. "I like the speckles."

So Ellie tried speckles on purpose. Red, yellow, blue. The paper looked like music.

## Showing One Friend

Mara asked if Ellie wanted to show her painting to the others.

Ellie stepped backward.

"Not everyone," Mara said. "Maybe one friend."

Ellie chose Mimi.

Mimi hopped onto the low table and looked at the speckled paper.

"It feels happy," Mimi said. "Like drums, but quieter."

Ellie touched the corner of the paper with her trunk.

"Would you like to hang it near your resting mat?" Mara asked.

Ellie nodded.

## The Small Art Show

By the end of the month, Ellie had painted six pictures.

Noor hung them on a short line outside the scenery tent. The sign said:

Ellie's Colors

Mimi came first. Then two clowns. Then the ticket taker. No one crowded Ellie. No one shouted.

"This blue one feels peaceful," said a clown.

Ellie stood beside Mara and listened.

Her ears warmed, but she did not hide.

## Ellie Keeps Painting

Ellie did not need to be the star of the circus.

She needed a brush, safe paint, patient friends, and time.

Some mornings she painted. Some mornings she only watched Noor mix colors. Both counted.

One day, Mimi asked, "What will you paint next?"

Ellie dipped her brush in green and made a curving line like a path.

Mara smiled. "Looks like she's still deciding."

Ellie added one yellow dot at the end of the path.

That felt right.
