## Story

## The Morning Rounds

Leo knew every sound in the circus animal yard.

The monkeys clicked their tongues when breakfast was late. The zebras stamped when flies bothered their ears. The lions, Mira and Sol, rumbled softly when Leo brushed clean straw into their shaded resting pen.

"Good morning, friends," Leo said, setting down a bucket of fresh water.

Mira blinked at him. Sol flopped onto his side with a sigh so large it stirred the straw.

Leo smiled. He did not rush the animals or shout at them. He watched. He listened. He learned what helped each one feel safe.

## A Gate Comes Open

That afternoon, a warm wind pushed at the tent ropes. Gray clouds stacked up beyond the ticket booth.

Near the storage shed, two clowns were carrying a tower of painted boxes.

"Left, left," called Buttons.

"Your left or my left?" puffed Pip.

The boxes bumped a gate latch. Click.

Before anyone noticed, three monkeys slipped through the open gate. The zebras followed the monkeys. Mira and Sol padded out last, curious about all the fuss.

"Stop running," shouted Pip.

Leo raised one hand. "Quiet voices," he said. "If we panic, they will panic too."

## Leo Starts With Calm

Leo began with the lions, because the storm was close and the crowd had to stay well back.

"Sam," Leo said to the stagehand, "please ask everyone to move behind the blue rope. No shouting."

Then he crouched beside the path, not too close.

"Mira," he called softly. "Sol. This way."

He placed their favorite tug toy on the ground and stepped back. Mira sniffed it. Sol nudged it with his nose.

Thunder muttered.

"I know," Leo said. "Let us get to the dry straw."

Mira picked up the toy and walked after him. Sol followed Mira. Leo kept his steps slow until both lions were resting in their shelter with the gate fastened.

## Leo's Clever Plan

Next came the monkeys.

"They are on the popcorn cart," Buttons whispered.

The smallest monkey wore a paper bag like a hat. Another was trying to open the napkin box.

Leo did not grab. He did not chase.

"We need something more interesting than popcorn," he said.

Buttons opened the puzzle feeder, a bright wooden box with sliding doors. Leo tucked banana slices inside and set it near the open gate.

Tap, tap, tap.

The monkey with the paper-bag hat crept closer.

"That door moves," Leo said gently, showing the latch.

The monkey slid the little door, found the banana, and squeaked with delight. Soon the others crowded around the feeder and carried it back into their play yard, where Buttons shut the gate behind them.

"No tail grabbing," Leo said.

"No tail grabbing," Buttons agreed.

## Guiding the Zebras

The zebras were the hardest, because wind made them skittish. They trotted in circles near the water barrels, ears flicking.

"We make a path," Leo said. "No ropes around necks. No chasing."

Sam and Pip carried soft guide boards, the kind used during morning walks. They stood far apart, leaving a wide, open lane toward the zebra shelter.

Leo shook a bucket of crunchy carrots. Rattle, rattle.

The lead zebra lifted her head.

"You know this sound," Leo said.

She took one careful step. Then another. The other zebras followed her down the quiet lane and into the dry shelter.

Rain began to patter on the tent roof as Leo closed the last gate.

## After the Storm

When every animal had food, water, and a dry place to rest, Leo finally sat on an overturned bucket.

"You saved the show," said the director.

Leo shook his head. "The show can wait. We kept the animals safe."

The director looked at the closed gates, the calm lions, the busy monkeys, and the zebras nibbling hay.

"You are right," she said. "Tonight, we will tell the audience what happened and begin after everyone has rested."

Buttons and Pip came forward holding the bent latch.

"We are sorry," Pip said.

"Then you can help me check every gate before supper," Leo said.

The clowns nodded. The rain softened. Inside the shelter, Sol gave one sleepy rumble.

Leo listened and smiled. That sound meant safe.
