## Story

## Lila and the Hungry Monkey

Lila was resting under a striped umbrella after acrobat practice when she heard a tiny rustle near the fence.

Two brown eyes peeked through the leaves.

"Hello there," Lila said softly.

A small monkey sat on the other side of the fence, watching the apple in her hand. He looked thin, dusty, and unsure.

Lila wanted to hand him the apple right away, but she remembered what her coach always said: when an animal needs help, ask someone who knows how to help safely.

She waved to Mara, the circus animal-care worker.

"I found a visitor," Lila said. "He looks hungry."

Mara crouched beside her. "Good call. Let us give him space."

## A Careful Kindness

Some performers hurried over when they heard about the monkey.

"Can he do tricks?" one asked.

"Maybe he could join the show," said another.

Lila shook her head. "He's not here to perform. He's here because he needs help."

Mara placed slices of banana and apple in a shallow dish, then stepped back. The monkey crept forward, grabbed one piece, and scampered to a safe branch to eat.

"He's clever," said Lila.

"Clever enough to choose for himself," Mara said.

The performers grew quiet. Watching was harder than rushing, but it was kinder.

## The Missing Ribbon

The next day, the monkey returned.

He did not come into the tent. He sat on the fence and chattered while Lila practiced a ribbon routine.

When the wind lifted Lila's blue ribbon and carried it into a low tree, the monkey tilted his head.

"That is my only blue one," Lila said.

The monkey scampered along the branch, picked up the ribbon, and dropped it on the grass outside the fence.

Lila laughed. "Thank you."

She did not reach for him. She did not ask him to do it again. She simply placed a slice of apple in the dish and stepped away.

## Friendship With Boundaries

Over the next week, the monkey visited the fence often.

Lila named him Pip, though Mara reminded her that Pip still belonged to the trees, not the circus.

Sometimes Pip watched practice. Sometimes he ignored everyone and searched for bugs in the bark. Sometimes he did not visit at all.

One afternoon, the performer who had asked about tricks brought a bowl of clean water.

"For Pip," he said. "No strings attached."

Lila smiled. "That is the best kind of gift."

At sunset, Pip leaped back toward the woods. Lila waved from her side of the fence.

"See you if you choose to come back," she called.

Pip chattered once from the branch, then vanished into the leaves.
