## Story

## Lila's Big Dream

Lila came from a family of wire walkers.

Her older siblings practiced high above the ring with safety lines, spotters, and careful checks. Lila practiced on the low training wire, only a few inches over a mat.

"I want to learn the big act," she said.

"You will," her brother Nico told her. "But not before your body and training are ready."

Lila knew he was right. She still felt left out.

## Lila's Careful Practice

After supper, Lila asked her mother to watch one more low-wire practice.

"Not by yourself," her mother said. "Never by yourself on the wire."

Lila nodded. She crossed the low wire with a balance pole, turned slowly, and stepped down onto the mat.

Then she noticed something near the equipment trunk.

One silver clamp from the high-wire frame was lying on the floor.

Lila picked it up. "Is this supposed to be here?"

Her mother's face changed at once.

## Lila's Warning

Lila and her mother hurried to the main ring.

Her siblings were warming up nearby.

"Stop," Lila called. Her voice shook, so she tried again. "Stop. I found a loose clamp."

Nico lowered his balance pole. "Where?"

Lila held it up.

No one teased her. No one said she was too small. The act leader took the clamp, checked the frame, and found the empty place where it belonged.

"Good eyes, Lila," he said. "Everyone off the platform until this is fixed."

## Believing Her Own Voice

While the crew repaired the frame, Lila sat on the mat.

Her hands were still trembling.

"I sounded nervous," she said.

"You sounded clear," her mother said. "Clear matters more."

Nico sat beside her. "You protected the whole act."

Lila looked at the low wire. "But I did not cross anything high."

"Courage is not only walking across," Nico said. "Sometimes courage is making everyone stop."

## The Changed Performance

The crew fixed the clamp, checked the frame twice, and shortened the act.

At the end of the show, the ringmaster invited Lila into the ring.

"Tonight's safest act began with someone paying attention," he said.

Lila stepped onto her low practice wire. Her mother stood beside the mat. Nico held the other end of the balance pole.

Lila crossed slowly, the way she had practiced.

The audience clapped when her feet touched the mat.

## Brave in the Right Way

Afterward, Lila's siblings gathered around her.

"Next time you see something wrong, tell us again," Nico said.

"Even if my voice shakes?"

"Especially then."

Lila smiled. She still wanted to learn the higher wire someday. For now, she had a low wire, a careful coach, and a voice her family trusted.

That was enough to begin.
