## Story

## Max Likes Jokes

Max the monkey could make almost anyone laugh. He swung upside down from ropes, balanced peanuts on his nose, and copied the ringmaster's fancy walk perfectly.

He also loved pranks.

Sometimes he hid Sparkles the Clown's hat. Sometimes he tied ribbons around Jumbo the Elephant's tail. Once, he filled Bella the Bear's drum with popcorn.

Max laughed every time. His friends laughed sometimes too, but not always.

"A joke is better when everyone enjoys it," Bella told him.

Max nodded, but his paws were already itching for the next idea.

## Max's Friends Give Him a Warning

The next afternoon, Sparkles, Jumbo, and Bella asked Max to sit with them beside the practice ring.

"Max," said Sparkles the Clown, "we need to talk about your behavior."

"Was it the popcorn drum?" Max asked.

"And the hat," Sparkles said.

"And my tail ribbon," Jumbo added.

Max looked at the ground.

"I only wanted everyone to laugh."

"We like your playfulness," Bella said. "We do not like worrying that our props will disappear before a show."

Jumbo lowered his trunk gently. "Ask first. Safe first."

Max nodded. "Ask first. Safe first."

He meant it. Mostly.

## The Big Performance

On the day of the big performance, the circus buzzed with excitement. Costumes sparkled. Musicians warmed up. The audience filled every row.

Max had a small part in the finale. He was supposed to carry Sparkles's bucket across the ring, tip it toward the crowd, and reveal a shower of paper flowers.

The bucket sat backstage beside the flower box.

Max peeked inside.

"Paper flowers are nice," he whispered. "But real water would be funnier."

He forgot to ask. He forgot safe first.

## The Joke That Went Wrong

When the finale began, Max scampered into the ring with the bucket. Sparkles winked at him, trusting him to follow the act.

Max tipped the bucket.

Splash.

Water spilled across the floor instead of paper flowers. Sparkles slipped but caught himself on the ring rail. Bella's costume got soaked. Jumbo quickly stepped in front of the wet patch so no one else would walk there.

The music stopped.

Max's ears burned. This was not the kind of laugh he had wanted.

## Taking Responsibility

For one moment, Max wanted to hide in the rafters. Instead, he remembered Bella's words.

"Ask first. Safe first," he whispered.

Max grabbed a towel from the prop table and ran back.

"I changed the bucket," he said loudly. "I am sorry. Please do not step here. The floor is wet."

Sparkles helped him mop. Jumbo kept the audience entertained by balancing three dry towels on his trunk. Bella changed into her spare vest.

After the floor was safe, Max turned to his friends.

"I did not ask first," he said. "And it was not safe. I am sorry."

"Thank you for saying it clearly," Bella said. "Now help us finish the show the right way."

## Max Makes a Better Choice

Max nodded. He could not undo the splash, but he could make his next choice better.

He picked up the paper flowers and checked with Sparkles.

"May I still do the flower part?"

Sparkles looked at the dry floor, the correct bucket, and Max's worried face.

"Yes," Sparkles said. "Paper flowers only."

Max carried the bucket to the center ring. This time, he tipped it carefully.

Whoosh. Paper flowers floated over the front row. Children reached up, laughing. Bella spun beneath them. Jumbo trumpeted. Sparkles took a bow and tugged Max gently beside him.

Max bowed too, not because everything was perfect, but because he had stayed to fix what he could.

## A Changed Monkey

After the show, Max helped dry the last towel and put every prop back where it belonged.

"I still like jokes," Max said.

"Good," Sparkles said. "The circus needs jokes."

"But I will ask first," Max said.

"And keep them safe," Bella added.

Max nodded. "Ask first. Safe first."

The next week, Max invented a new prank with Sparkles: a hat that released paper butterflies when Sparkles said the word banana. Everyone knew about it except the audience, and nobody slipped, misplaced a prop, or felt hurt.

That made the laughter even better.
