## Story

## Max the Magician's Apprentice

Max loved magic because it was part wonder and part work. He liked the flash of silver cards, the snap of silk scarves, and the quiet practice that happened long before anyone clapped.

Every afternoon after school, he hurried to Mr. Merlin's small workshop behind the circus tent.

"Hat first, wand second, safety always," Mr. Merlin would say.

Max repeated it until he could say it in his sleep.

He practiced simple tricks first: a coin behind an ear, a scarf from an empty sleeve, a deck of cards that sorted itself by color. Sometimes he dropped things. Sometimes he said the wrong word and turned a blue scarf green.

"Mistakes are messages," Mr. Merlin told him. "They show us what to practice next."

Max wrote that down in his notebook.

## The Big Show

One bright morning, Mr. Merlin pinned a golden poster to the workshop door.

"Annual Magic Show," Max read. "Tonight?"

"Tonight," said Mr. Merlin. "And this year, my apprentice will open the act."

Max's stomach fluttered. "What if I forget a step?"

"Then you pause," Mr. Merlin said. "A magician who pauses is still a magician."

They set out the props: three rings, two hats, one velvet box, and the silver wand for the grand finale.

"Hat first," Max whispered.

"Wand second," said Mr. Merlin.

"Safety always," they finished together.

## The Disappearance of Mr. Merlin

Backstage, with five minutes to curtain, Max dusted the velvet box. A sneeze tickled his nose.

"Ah-ah-ah-choo."

His elbow bumped the silver wand. The wand rolled, tapped the box, and sent a puff of purple smoke into the air.

Pop.

Mr. Merlin vanished.

"Mr. Merlin?" Max whispered.

No answer.

The stage manager called, "Four minutes."

Max's hands shook. He wanted to wave the wand wildly and shout every magic word he knew. Then he remembered his notebook.

Mistakes are messages.

## The Magic Spell

Max opened the notebook with trembling fingers. He found a page titled *Vanishing Box: If Something Goes Wrong*.

"Do not rush," Max read aloud. "Check the box. Check the wand. Ask for an anchor."

An anchor. Max looked around and saw Lila, the stage assistant, holding a coil of rope.

"Lila," Max said, "I need help. Can you hold the box steady and count to three?"

"Yes," Lila said at once.

Max checked the latch. It was turned halfway, not locked. He checked the wand. Its silver tip was glowing purple, which meant the spell had paused instead of finished.

"Ready?" Lila asked.

Max breathed in. "Ready."

"One. Two. Three."

Max tapped the box once, turned the latch, and said the return words slowly.

"Merlin, mend. Curtain, bend. Bring my teacher back again."

The box rattled. Purple smoke curled out in a neat spiral.

## The Show Can Begin

Pop.

Mr. Merlin appeared sitting inside the velvet box with his hat on backward.

"Excellent pause," he said.

Max stared. "You are not angry?"

"You made a mistake," Mr. Merlin said. "Then you slowed down, read the instructions, and asked for help. That is exactly what a responsible magician does."

The stage manager poked her head in. "Thirty seconds."

Mr. Merlin stepped out of the box and straightened his hat. "Shall we?"

Max nodded.

That night, Max opened the show with the scarf trick. One scarf clung to his sleeve, but he paused, smiled, and turned it into a bow. The audience laughed and clapped.

For the grand finale, Mr. Merlin vanished on purpose. Max counted slowly, checked the latch, and brought him back in a shower of silver sparks.

Backstage after the applause, Max added one more line to his notebook:

*A good magician practices the trick. A better magician practices what to do when the trick goes wrong.*
